The first permanent settler in what would become Harrisonburg was Captain John Smith who built a log cabin on the site of present day McCoy University in 1775. In 1812, Colonel Nathaniel Banks moved his family to Harrisonburg from Winchester and founded Mechanicsville which became home to several other families before it burned down in 1814. The town was platted by James Fenton in 1824 and named for General George Washington who had died two years earlier. In 1827, James Fenton erected a large frame courthouse which served as the main governmental center until it was destroyed by fire in 1829. The town quickly rebuilt and by 1830 had reached its current size with a population of 3,000 people. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Virginia and marched southward through central Virginia seeking reinforcements for his campaigns against the Union army under Major General Ulysses S Grant. As the troops passed through Harrisonburg on their way north they were met with cheers from local residents who welcomed them like brothers come home after many months away at war After the Civil War ended, most of southern Virginia reverted back to slavery while northern Virginians took up free labor opportunities available to them following Reconstruction which began in 1865 In 1880, William & Mary College opened its doors here becoming one of America's first coeducational universities In 1915, US Senator Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) married Elizabeth Bolling here marking the beginning of diplomatic relations between these two countries The postwar era saw a rise in businesses such as truck stops and motels along Route 1A which paralleled Interstate 95 until development immediately adjacent to I-95 defeated efforts to preserve this natural corridor . After the war, many Americans, including George Washington, moved to this area and built homes. By 1815, there were 1,500 residents in Harrisonburg and it became an excise station on the Susquehanna River. On November 16, 1815, Harrisonburg was incorporation as a village within Orangevoie Township under the name of "Harrisonburgh". In 1832 it became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people. In 1861 Union General Beauregard occupied the town during his march through Virginia to Richmond after defeating Confederate General Robert Ewell at battle of First Manassas Court House. After Union victory at Bull Run Bridge over Lee’s army (June 28), Beauregard left most of Fairfax County for Hanover County and put into effect plans for Reconstruction in Virginia which would make black people third-class citizens without voting rights or owning property qualifications for office. Local whites began organizing Resistance movements against Reconstruction policies that they saw as unconstitutional discrimination against their white minority community; these efforts eventually led to violence against white supremacists throughout much of Virginia during 1865–1866 called “The Great Social War” by historians such as James Mudge and Edwin Meek Jr.. Aftermath of Civil War: Many African Americans lost their jobs due to competition from white men who could only find employment if they owned land or had political power; these communities formed so-called 'black ghettoes' throughout much southern Virginia until well into the 21st century due to lack of available social services or education opportunities for descendants born after 1965 ARA compliance ended those negative experiences somewhat but not completely
