Harrisonburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 10,839 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Harrisonburg County and part of the Harrisonburg–Alexandria, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by James Armstead in 1747 as a small trading post on the Rappahannock River. In 1801, it became a city, and in 1867 it was made an independent county. The name "Harrisonburg" originated with John Hargrave, 1st Baron Hargrave who built a home there in 1785. The first post office opened in 1865 and was called Armstrong's Ferry Landing because mail boats used to cross the river there from Armstrong's Ferry on the Potomac River. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley unsuccessfully attacked Union General George Buell's army near Harrisonburg Creek on occasion during his successful Overland Campaigns against Ulysses S. Grant; this event is known as Easley's Raid. On July 5, 1861, Confederate Lieutenant Colonel William Neely Carr employed 120 mounted riflemen (the “Carr Brigade”) to raid Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters at Funkstown Court House northeast of Harrisonburg while Union Major-General Sterling Price occupied Funkstown Plantation east of town; these actions are also known as Carr’s Raid or Neely’s Raid. Anson Burks started a small shoe factory in 1881 just north of town limits and soon became one of eastern Virginia’s leading bootmakers and dealers; he closed his business in 1922 but left his mark on downtown Harrisonburg with his courthouse square still bearing his name today (Burks Square). John Dorney established Dorney Chemical Company (later First American Chemical Company) here in 1901 which became one of eastern Virginia’s leading chemical companies; he also founded Greenfield Baptist Church here which remains active today as one of northern Virginia’s most prominent Protestant churches. Harry Stoneman began producing natural gas here starting about 1912 until 1913 when he switched to oil production due to environmental concerns about gas production from shale formations underlies much of central Virginia . . . after World War I electric generation increased rapidly throughout eastern Virginias due to wartime needs including electrification not only for military purposes but also for industry creating thousands new jobs along with reducing emissions from individual homes After Reconstruction era ended following Civil War many white families moved out into industrial areas such as Berea or Lynchburg leaving African Americans behind who were forced into hard labor or worked mainly around white households picking crops or cleaning buildings

As of 2010, there were 5,812 people residing in Harrisonburg; 2% were African American and 98% white Anglo-Saxon Protestants according to ancestry studies done by AncestryDNA™; 3% were Latino or Hispanic Americans; 0% were Asian Americans; 0% were Native Americans; 6% were from other races; 7% had two or more races; and 4% reported being multi-racial/ethnicity unknown or not applicable to their race or ethnicity
The town of Harrisonburg was founded in 1775 by Captain John Smith. The town grew rapidly and in 1800, it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1812, the town was destroyed by a fire that burned for three days. It is now a ghost town.
