By 1785, however, English settlers began to arrive in increasing numbers and skirmishes between colonists and Native Americans began to occur frequently throughout what would become known as "the Queen's County". On October 10th, 1790 Robert Harrison purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) along James River south of present day downtown Harrisonburg from John Westfall for £5 per acre ($10 per hectare). This purchase helped solidify Virginians' resolve to settle down around these waterways as opposed to continuing their nomadic ways which had characterized them since contact with Europeans. Over time many other parcels were bought and sold until all that remained were just a few square miles near James River east of downtown; this area is now called Pimlico Heights or simply Pimlico Peninsula In 1792 Patrick Henry delivered a House Resolution condemning King George III's Stamp Act which resulted in numerous Patriot protests across the colonies including ones led by Robert Harrison who convened a meeting at Randolph Hall on November 8th seeking agreement among local patriots on how best to oppose British tyranny without taking up arms against their government On December 5th William Smallwood acquired 380 acres (146 hectares) adjoining what would become Pimlico Heights from Nicholas Nicholson for $350 per acre ($600 per hectare). During The Jacksonian Era (1848-1892), which saw sweeping changes throughout American society including significant transformations at home and abroad, Harrisonburg experienced several key moments including becoming a city under federal jurisdiction following annexation by Richmond followingThe Mexican-American War (1846-1847). This event ushered in an era characterized by growing industrialization along with increased population growth within what would later become known as Greater Richmond County. This period also saw major advances at nearby UVa which became known nationally for its academic excellence thanks largely to Benjamin Franklin Doctorate winner John Marshall Harlan II (1795-1878) who taught at UVa before serving as Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary Of State (1865-1913). Harrisonburg is a town in Harrisonburg County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,824 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Harrisonburg County were Englishmen who arrived in 1607 during the time of King James I of England and his brother Prince Rupert. They erected a fort on an island in the James River near present-day Harrisonburg and named it Fort Caroline after their queen regnant, Caroline of Ansbach. In 1738, Captain John Smith located a cabin on land grants from Colonel George Washington at Big Creek for $200 per year to establish himself as a Virginian settler. In 1740, when British troops under Major General Edward Braddock invaded Virginia and burned Williamsburg and other settlements along the Potomac River valley, Captains William Byrd (of Botetourt) and Nathaniel Weed discovered gastholes near present-day Harrisonburgh and made arrangements with colonial Gaspar de la Garde to exploit them commercially. By 1750, large quantities of gas had been discovered throughout eastern Virginia; it became known as "the gasthole way". In 1768–69 Stono Ferry Road was created when landowner James Minor improved Logansport Road by connecting it to his ferry landing at Great Meadows on Little rivers below Stono Ferry Dam (near modern day Buchanan). The settlement that grew up around Minor's landing became known as "Stono Ferry", which still exists today adjacent to Petersburg National Battlefield west of Interstate 95 (I-95 exit 4). For many years this area lay within present day Harrisonburg City limits; however, following its reincorporation into the city limits effective January 1st 2009 it has become home to several businesses including minor league baseball's Peninsula Pilots affiliate since 2003. I-395 enters downtown Harrisonburg just east of Minor's Landing before leaving again immediately south towards Great Meadows where Stono Ferry Road rejoins Logansport Road east of modern day Buchanan Street Bridge across Big Rivers below Stono Ferry Dam - becoming part of current I-495 corridor!
