In 1802, Harrisonburg became an incorporated town with a population of 12,000. The first post office was established in 1812. The land that makes up present-day Harrisonburg was originally part of much larger Upper Virginian settlement called Loudoun County. In 1779, James II issued a proclamation designating what are now parts of both Fairfax and Loudoun Counties as "Harrisonburg Township." A year later, King George III gave permission for farmers to settle within these boundaries. By 1800, there were over 100 families living in Harrisonburg. The early years of the 19th century were difficult for Harrisonburg because it competed with other settlements for trade with nearby Washington D.C., which had become an important center for economic growth during this time period due to its growing industries such as mechanics and fish processing plants. However, by 1810/11 many entrepreneurs had developed businesses within what is now downtown Harrisonburg including soap manufacturers J & E Mason (now Macy's) and John Stevens & Sons Warehouse; flour mills Knoppers & Company (now Knoppers), Weiser Bros thenceforth known as Weiser Mills; cigar makers Smith brotherscigars; brick masons Pemberton Brothers brickyards; saddlers Pettis Brothers saddlesmiths; wagon builders Crouse Brothers wagonshops; and cigar smokers Davie brothers cigars
Harrisonburg is one of the oldest cities in Virginia. The settlement was first established by the Powhatan people in 1609, and it became a part of the British colonies in 1775. The city was named for George Washington, who was born here in 1732.
