Hampton, Virginia is a town in Pulaski County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke metropolitan area. The town is named for General John Hampton of the Continental Army who fought in the Battle of Yorktown and later served as governor of Virginia. The first post office was established in 1814 and remained open until 1841. It was renamed Hampton in 1851 after General John Hampton's death. In 1863, Norfolk Southern Railway built a line from Portsmouth to Hampton which helped to stimulate economic development in the town. In 1907, when Norfolk Southern Railway merged with Atlanta-based Georgia Pacific Railroad, Hampton became a part of Atlanta. However, it regained its independent status as an incorporated municipality within Pulaski County in 1974. Hampton has two schools; Harrisonburg Elementary School and Roanoke Elementary School which are both public schools run by the Pulaski County school board. There are also several private academies and charter schools located nearby including: Anson Hill Academy (a prekindergarten through 12th grade school), Carrington Preparatory High School (13th-18th grades), Scotland Chapel Academy (9-12th grade), Chestnut Hill Preparatory Charter School (grades 1-8), Asbury Park Intermediate School (K-6), Presbyterian Daycare Center (7 days per week) and Science Technology Magnet Middle/High School which offers classes from PreKindergarten through 8th grade as well as adult education programs such as welding technology classes for high school students or computer programming courses for college students!

Hampton is a town in Page County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hampton were either Native American or European settlers who arrived during the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1764, James Mooney built a log cabin on the present-day site of Hampton Roads Naval Base. Mooney and his family remained until 1813 when they moved to Yorktown because of the political instability then prevailing in Virginia. In that year, General George WashingtonUkehampton Landing I visited what is now Hampton Roads Naval Station and ordered moored ships be burned as an warning to any British sailors who might come ashore looking for fresh supplies and recruits for their military forces invading America. In 1861, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Hughes established a post office at Hampton Roads Naval Station in honor of General Robert Ewell Howard who had fought with Ulysses S Grant against Confederate forces at Franklin University on April 12th of that year. The first postmaster was Captain John Wainwright whose office was located on High Street near today's Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum which he donated to Hampton in 1892 after his death from tuberculosis. In 1870, Commodore John D. Stockett founded Norfolk Navy Yard which later became Norfolk Southern Railway's Petersburg yards where locomotives were built before being delivered to various railroads throughout North America including Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company (C&NW) which acquired them from NSR in 1923 and used them on their main line from Chicago through points east into Pennsylvania; making it one of the longest lines north of New England without switching out of service until Conrail abandoned it in 2001 At NPY we also erected some beautiful new boilers - all brass with white lettering - examples still extant are 4-8-0 No2s #361 (1923), 4-8-1 Mogul #362 (1925), 6-10-2 Swenham #363 (1926), 740(1929). All these engines were built by JE Loyd & Co Ltd., Vulcan Iron Works Ltd., Brockway Iron Works Ltd., Govan Iron Works Ltd., Fenton Iron Works Ltd.(4 builders) under licence from NBL & CO . Some very fine specimens can still be seen today at Union Pacific Railroad Depot Yard Museum near Aberdeen, Minnesota . From there they hauled coal down the famous “H” Line between Minneapolis/St Paul and Omaha before finally reaching their final destination – Philadelphia/Frisco . These engines are collectively known as "The Old Pennsylvanian" class due to their common operation along that line . steamboats similar but not identical have been preserved by several owners around country including Cumberland Riverboat Company LLC dba Eastern Shore Steamboat Museum Group Incorporated www.easternshoresteamboats dot com Hampton was incorporated as a town on July 15th1900 by act of Congress following passage of legislation creating local government within newly formed Page County following clashes between slaveowners and free working men over land ownership rights west of Williamsburg Bridge across James River
Hampton was founded by Captain John Smith in 1624, and became an important military post in the Virginia Colony. The town was destroyed during the American Revolution, but it was rebuilt and grew rapidly after Confederation.
