Hampton is a town in Powhatan County, Virginia, USA. The population was 9,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond– Petersburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hampton is bordered by Portsmouth to the north and east, Lynchburg to the south and west, and Norfolk to the northwest. The town's first permanent settler was John Smith in 1624. The original gridiron plan for Hampton Roads was submitted to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1938 as an exhibit on "The development of Hampton Roads." This plan proposed that four roads be routed through or near Hampton: George Washington Parkway (Route 1), York Road (Route 2), James Fenton Highway (Route 3), and Elizabeth River Drive (Route 4). In 1941, Route 5 became known as Old Dominion Boulevard when it was added from downtown Portsmouth to terminate at western edge of town after crossing Elizabeth River Drive. In 1923, Entergy acquired a controlling interest in Westinghouse Electric Company which had been founded by William Westinghouse in 1871.Westinghouse Electric Co.'s initial business area included power generation and transmission with operations located mainly within present-day Norfolk. However after Entergy merged with GEICO in 1951 their electric businesses were combined into one company under the name Westinghouse Electric Corporation which later merged into United States Steel Corporation It should also be noted that neither George Washington Parkway nor York Road ever crossed Elizabeth River Drive before its addition as a local route; this was because both Routes 1 and 2 passed through downtown Portsmouth on either side ofElizabeth River Drive until they joined up east of town alongGeorge Washington Parkway during construction of that road's routing around 1965-1966 when center lanes were completed following what is now calledOld Dominion Boulevard - making East versuswest routes separated from each other for once! Hampton's first post office opened on October 10th 1892; however no mail service operated until 1915 due to World War I hostilities which interrupted rail service between Richmond and Petersburg! hamptonroads@gmail.com
