Hampton is a town in Norfolk County, Virginia, United States. The population was 28,812 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1754 by Capt. John Smith and settlers from Portsmouth, England. It became an independent municipality on May 15, 1853. The first settler in Hampton was Capt. John Smith who came to America in 1754 with HMS "Providence" and landed at Newport News on April 12 of that year. He built the first house in what is now known as Hampton Roads and named it New Providence after his ship's home country of England. As early as 1756 he had organized a militia company to defend the colony against English aggression and soon after became its captaincy judge for the district of Portsmouth (now Norfolk). In 1758 Smith married Pocahontas Powhatan and together they started to move around the area looking for land for their new family – which eventually numbered 10 children total including 8 sons and 2 daughters born to Captain John Smith’s second wife Elizabeth Parish alias “Pocahontas” (born about 1685). In those days there were no roads or telephone service so they had to travel long distances by horseback or wagons over rough trails through Wilderness until they located some fertile ground on Roanoke Island where they erected their first log cabin/small farmstead called "New Providence". In December of that year Captain John Smith died suddenly while out hunting with his son James who succeeded him asCaptain of New Providence Plantation which then included much of today's Hampton Roads Including much of today's Newport News Shipbuilding District including the venerable USS Yorktown completed in 1945 just blocks away fromwhere we stand today! For many years prior to her completion Yorktown served as both primary naval base for operations against Japanese forces during World War II as well as homeport for numerous Naval Reserve ships providing needed manpower during peacetime deployments! After World War II she returned back into Navy Service being converted into an amphibious assault ship called USS Valley Forge before becoming an oil storage tanker when she was decommissioned in 1987 and sold for scrap finally being scrapped here at our old plant site just yards from where we stand today! Please allow me to conclude this short history lesson by sharing one last story about Patriotism & Hamptons past with you all……………. On Thanksgiving Day 1984 American troops invaded Panama resulting in Operation Just Cause which resultedin over 200 casualties among U S Marines & professionals assigned thereto including 5 Officers Killed & Over 50 Wounded!!! From this event Americas most famous Marine hero General George Casey took command leading U S Forces into battle…and won!!! That same day also marked the beginning of what would be known as Historic Hampton Roads!!
