Hampton is a town in Norfolk County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portsmouth-Norfolk Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hampton was founded in 1781 by John and Elizabeth Smith as a small community on the east bank of the James River near modern day Portsmouth. The town was first settled in 1736 by English colonists who named it Monacan or Monecan after Mount Monaca on the James River. The current name comes from Captain John Hampden's landing there on October 23, 1775 and his proclamation that Great Britain be "the author and finisher of this great revolution." Hampden's landing signified an end to British rule over North America and the beginning of American independence. In 18th century era, many plantations were located around present-day Hampton Roads including Halifax Plantation on James River, Powhatan Plantation near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Nottoway Plantation near Norfolk, Brentwood Plantation near Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, as well as scores of smaller plantations scattered throughout colonial Virginia. Many early Virginians worked these plantations providing low paid labor for their owners which helped contribute to social stability during difficult times. After emancipation in 1865 many slaves became free men working on these plantations until 1898 when they were all granted full citizenship by the Virginia General Assembly under then Governor Elisha Graynor governoralty.
