Hampton is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington– Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been named for General John Forbes Battle and first settled by his family in 1736.
Hampton, Virginia is a small town in southern Virginia. It was founded in 1764 by James Smith and his family and has been located in the present-day area since then. The population of Hampton was 9,321 as of the 2010 census. As one of only five places in Virginia with a college degree or higher (the others being Richmond, Norfolk, Lynchburg, and Roanoke), Hampton is home to numerous businesses and institutions including Hampton University, which has campuses in both the town proper and in Norfolk County; Randolph College; Spelman College; Bishop England Baptist School; Stonewall Jackson High School; Brown University; and several other universities. The town began as an agricultural village on the site of what is now downtown Hampton. In 1825 it became part of Henrico County when that county was created from parts of York County. In 1828 it became part of Portsmouth County when that county was created from parts of Gloucester County. In 1846 it became part of Fairfax County when that county was created from parts of Alexandria County. On July 15, 1907, Hampton's incorporation as a city occurred with the passage by Congress of an act entitled "An Act to Incorporate the City of Hampton." That same year saw enactment by Governor Elisha Gray Allen Jr., later Ulysses S. Grant III, legislation creating what is now known as James Kapp's Landing Marina on Jamestown Sound—the first large deep water marina built in Virginia outside Petersburg—and also authorizing creation within the limits thereof by regulation not inconsistent therewithof for harbor purposes only such as wharfage rates and licenses for privateers authorized thereto without any appropriation therefor made upon presentation to the Mayor or Council at their regular meeting lieu thereof duly convened under this act.—Hampton v. Kapp (1907). Hampton experienced some significant growth following its incorporation into a city status on July 15th 1907: first came expansion into new neighborhoods adjacent to downtown along Washington Street between King Street and Blanding Street; secondly came development around Anacostia Avenue (now Eastern Market) turning what had been rural farmland into residential areas filled with newly purchased land Lots 1-5 totaling 5 acres each eastwardly extending thence down Anacostia River Toward Point Lookout Road whereupon additional Lots were developed parallel thereto upriver unto Point Lookout Road beyond which additional lots were developed continuing northerly toward Elizabethtown Road leading ultimately to Point Lookout Drive through which all streets lead except Elizabethtown Road directly northbound until reconnected southbound at Key Bridge cutting off its original course about two-thirds way between Elizabethtown Road & Point Lookout Drive thence running generally southerly paralleling Key Bridge before terminating approximately 2/3s WNW at point reaching Elizabethtown road again nearly joining its original course just past Key Bridge.— Hamlet v . They had four children: John Adams (born 1792), Thomas Jefferson (born 1805), Abigail Adams (born 1807), and Mary Jeffersons (born 1809). In 1795, Congress created Henrico County,Va., including part of what is now Hampton Roads with land granted by King George II of Great Britain to Sir Walter Raleigh for his new colony known as Roanoke Island. Rasputin's death did not stop Russia from invading Turkey; they advanced about 20 miles into Anatolia before being driven back by Ottoman forces under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 8,1914 when Russia withdrew its forces completely from Anatolia after making peace with Austria that year. In 1861 when Norfolk Southern Railway built its line through town to Blacksburg it named their station "Hampton". After that time Hamptons Station served all three railroad companies which shared a track between them across Chesapeake Bay until 1969 when Norfolk Southern left and CSX took over operations
