Gun targets have been a part of the community in Hampton for many years. The first target was erected in 1801 by Capt. John Brownell, who lived on Race Street. A gun club was formed in 1892 by Capt. Samuel J. Maynard and other officers of the Hampton military post. The first shooting competition was held at the post on October 4, 1893. In 1924, captain Walter Lillie organized and presided over a grand target shootout at the old Hampton Academy campus which is still one of the most popular events in town. The origins of modern shotgun hunting can be traced back to 1907 when Captain Denton Waddell set up shop on Nevin Avenue near present-day Leslie Park to sell shotguns, rifles and handguns to farmers and hunters from surrounding areas. Captain Waddell's store became known as 'The Gun Store'. In 1912, Captain Ewing Fenton opened his own sporting goods store on South Point Road adjacent to First Baptist Church which is now known as The Gun Shop with an adjoining shooting range that has been used by the Hampton Rifle Association ever since

The history of Hampton, Virginia dates back to the early 1600s when the area was part of the Powhatan Confederacy. The area was first settled by English colonists in 1607 and by 1712, it had become a part of Virginia. By 1800, Hampton had became an important agricultural center and its economy grew rapidly due to its location on the James River. In 1871, Hampton was consolidated with other towns in Richmond County into what is now known as Richmond. over time, Hampton's economy declined as manufacturing moved away from the city and development occurred within the city itself. However, since 1999, Hampton has experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Richmond County and major attractions such as Christmastime Parade and Heritage Festival have drawn residents and tourists alike to its many businesses and cultural attractions.
Hampton is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 12,538 as of the 2010 census. It is a town and former seat of Fairfax County. Hampton's history dates back to 1720 when John Smith founded the first settlement in what is now Hampton Roads. In 1814, after the Battle of Yorktown, General Robert E. Lee moved his army into this area from Richmond and established a new capital at Williamsburg. During World War II, much of Hampton was used as an encampment for troops preparing for battle on Decisive inland beaches near Gloucester and Portsmouth. After the war ended, most residents left to return home or establish other towns in the area around Norfolk or Chesapeake Bay. According to Forbes magazine in 2006, "the primary economic node" for Hampton was its agricultural sector which has been strong since before independence from Great Britain. However, some businesses have relocated away from town due to increased competition from larger cities such as Norfolk and Chesapeake Beachwns along I-95). Today many people live within walking distance of stores and restaurants that provide a wide variety of local cuisine including seafood (particularly crabs), Southern cooking (pimento cheese sandwiches with bacon wrapped date leaves) and Italian cuisine (penne pasta with tomato sauce). Since its founding by John Smith more than two centuries ago, Hampton has experienced growth both physically and economically - thanks in part to its location on major waterwayside highways making it accessible 24/7 for shopping malls located nearby as well as links to surrounding communities through bus lines and railroads

Hampton is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Lee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by English colonists in 1724 and was named for General George Hampton, who had commanded British forces during the American Revolution. It became an incorporated municipality on November 3, 1917. The first European settlers to what is now Hampton arrived in 1724 aboard HMS Dolphin under the command of Captain John Smith. They were comprised of about 30 men and three women as well as 11 children under the age of 18 from Huntingdon Parish in England who set out for North America on James Cook's first voyage with the Resolution and Discovery expedition that same year. A land grant called "King's Road" was given to Captain Smith's party by King George II on October 7, 1725 which extended from present day Fairfax County east to Prince Edward Island (now Canada) and included all of modern Suffolk County excepting Queenstown where it ended at what is now Arlington Cemetery; all but 2/3rds of modern Norfolk County including much of Portsmouth; all but 1/3rd of modern Sussex County including Eastbourne; and parts of Hampshire, Surrey and Warwickshire totaling over 100 square miles (248 square kilometers). After reaching Cape Henry (now Elizabeth City), they abandoned their ship alive off shore on December 16, 1725 while carrying supplies back to Jamestown Colony after routing an enemy force estimated at 10,000 soldiers along their way.
