Hampton is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 6,738 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampshire County. Hampton has been an incorporated town since 1872 and was first settled by English colonists in 1724. The town of Hampton was founded by English colonists on the Appomattox River in 1724 as part of what would become Fairfax County. The original hamlet consisted of five houses and fifty-six people, most of whom were farmers or traders who rented land from the local Native American tribes. By 1800, however, it had grown to 1,500 residents and had developed into a small industrial center with two factories and twelve homes employing over 100 people during the late 19th century. In 1872, Hampton became an incorporated town under Virginia law following a vote by its citizens. The incorporation process involved presentation of a petition signed by more than two-thirds of the town's residents; after review by the Board of Aldermen, it was ratified by referendum on December 12th. At that time, Hampton boasted a population size larger than any other incorporated community in Virginia except for Norfolk (which had only been chartered as an independent city in 1853). During World War II, Hampton played an important role as one of America's largest military towns with its concentration of munitions plants and related industries. In 1945-1946 alone, approximately 2 million tons (of weight) worth of munitions were produced inHampton alone; this amount made it one-seventhth overall nationwide when totaled up. From 1941 until September 1945 – just before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor – Hampton ranked second nationally among U.S., regional services centers for output per capita (behind Newark), behind only Chicago! It should be noted that these totals do not include products exported to Japan or other countries outside North America; instead they represent production within our country itself which helped support our economy during wartime! Hampton was chartered in 1646 as the parish of Hampton on the James River. In 1727, it became a town. The first settler in what is now Hampton was John Smith who arrived in 1650. The town was renamed Portsmouth after the English port of Portsmouth, Hampshire.
