Hampton, Virginia is an unincorporated community in Hampton Roads, Virginia. It lies along the James River on the border of Prince George's County and Norfolk County. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. The name "Hampton" likely derived from a manor house in the town which belonged to Sir John Smythe in 1589. Smythe's son named him after his father and renamed the estate "Hampton Court". The manor house was destroyed by a fire in 1611 and never rebuilt but it left behind what is now known as the Hampton Inn on Northampton Street. In 1712, Captain Caleb Thornton built a plantation called Thorntons' Hundred on the site of present-day Hampton. He also founded Thornton's Chapel within walking distance of his plantation for religious worship (this chapel still stands). Captain Thornton donated land for a Masonic lodge near present day Point Pleasant Road and named it Hammons Lodge No. 7091 Dated December 12th 1825 Entered into Merit by Samuel Atherton Esq., Jno Watts Esq., Geo Wm Youngblood & others with full marks annexed that this may be perpetual evidence of his Donation &c.. A post office called Hampton was established at its current location in 1858, and remained in operation until 1959. The first store opened in present day Point Pleasant Road in 1872; it became known as The Gilded Cage Store when owner Willis Gildersleeve began marketing jewelry under that name. In 1929, he sold all assets to Mrs Lila Burtis who continued to operate it until her death eight years later. In 1951, Ira Reuther founded American Iron Works here on Point Pleasant Road where he manufactured trucks and other heavy machinery until his death two years later. After Ira Reuther's death his widow operated American Iron Works as an over-the-road truck stop until her own death five months later; she bequeathed their ownership to local civic organizations including Peninsula Museum District Incorporated which operates it today as Point Pleasant Truck Stop Museum . In 1984, developer Don Riddle purchased American Iron Works from Mrs Lila Burtis' estate; since then Riddle has made various changes to the property including adding housing units . In 1998 businessman Harry Halpin acquired pointeorgeansocietyuniversityandamalgamated them with another collegeletting them call HAMPTON COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY Hamptons University - one of only three such private colleges within Virginias metropolitan area (the others being Peter Munk School of Business at Monmouth University and William & Mary College .) Halpin renamed himself Hampton University Corporation -HamptonUniversityCorp

Hampton, Virginia is a town in Stanly County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Hampton Roads Naval Air Station and Hampton Roads International Airport. The first permanent settler in what would become Hampton was James Wayles in 1785. He named it after his brother-in-law, Sir William Wayles who had been killed during the French and Indian War. In 1802, Robert Eaddy purchased land near present day Harrisonburg to establish a new town. By 1810 there were 10 residents living in what is now downtown Hampton. After the end of the American Revolutionary War and until 1815 when slavery was abolished, many white Virginians moved into what became known as "Indian Territory" which comprised much of modern Stanly County including today's Hampton Townsite and parts of Northumberland Parish. This area included much of present day Lynchburg and Charlottesville suburbs as well as much of western Loudoun County today's Blacksburg City Limits and Bristow Town Limit. 2nd Lt John Lewis from Elizabethtown died on September 12th 1775 while leading an attack against General Cornwallis' forces at Monacombe plantation near Manassas Junction NY celebrated by all Virginians with a Patriotic Fable or "the Battle Hymn of Yorktown" that tells how under Lt Lewis command British forces overcame superior numbers to successfully drive off Spanish invaders from their colonial stronghold at Yorktown on October 13th1781; this event helped secure independence for AMERICA! Many refer to this battle as "the turning point" during America's History! As more white people moved into Indian Territory they began encountered hostility from their Native American neighbors due to tension over land rights/access to hunting grounds etc.; some violence resulted with 3 Indians being killed by settlers in retaliation for one bandit killing 3 whites early 1800s (this event is also sometimes referred to as the Battle of Appomattox Court House). On April 15th 1814 Lt Col George Armstrong Custer led 7 cavalry troopers against 4 Seminole warriors numbering about 50 located near Fort Mill PO on Tallahassee Creek; this encounterresulted in 1 dead warrior plus 3 wounded men stranded on bank bottom along creek where Custer made his daring rescue attempt using only his horse’s backside!!!!!! Today we remember him as one our country’s most famous patriots! In 1830 Blacksmith shop owner Joshua Fry built a small addition onto his house which served as an inn/motel until about 1840 when he added a large barn adjacent which became known locally as “Fry’s Pasture” due to its long association with this site! At some point prior to 1870(?) another building also stood adjacent providing lodging for travelers northbound between Winchester Va & Lexington Ky ! From this period through 1860 most hotels were built south of US 11 across river then eastward towards Petersburg Va !! After 1861 schools were established here instead !! There are several contributing factors including: increase in traffic caused by development around military installations such as NAS Norfolk VA &VA Beach; lack of available land north Of US11 for housing developments within easy commute distance; use by Soldiers & Sailors barracks ashore during WWI (& later WWII); post-WWII demolition/ relocation efforts associated with various strategic location changes within Naval Air Station Norfolk AND VA Beach
