Hampton, Virginia is a town in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Albemarle County. It was founded in 1786 by General James Wilkinson as a small trading post on the James River. The town was named for Hampton Court Palace in London and its first mayor was John Randolph. The Village of Southampton forms part of the town boundaries. The hamlet of Chestnut Hill occupies most of the eastern side of Hampton and includes both sides of Interstate 95 between US Routes 1 and 7 (the "I-95 Freeway"). As early as 1786, General James Wilkinson established a trading post at Hampton Court Palace on the James River near present-day Charlottesville. A year later he named the new settlement after his wife's family home in London: Hampton Court Park became known as "Hampton". In 1800, when Richmond became an independent city, it merged with Hampton to form one large political entity under the name "Richmond County". However, this merger did not last; within a few years Richmond had regained its separate status and reincorporated into Hampton again. In 1825 Portsmouth Plantation on Henrico County's Eastern Shore became detached from Hampton to form what is now Portsmouth Township on Peninsula Road within Albemarle County limits. At that time there were only two villages located within present-day Hampton: Southampton and Chestnut Hill. In 1851 these two villages consolidated to form what is now known as "Hampton" proper - except for Southampton which continues to exist separately today as part of Portsmouth Township outside ofHampton's boundaries). In 1901 much of modern day Petersburg including parts of Chesterfieldtownship (now called Westmoreland) also came under control of Hanover County through an act approved by Congress which allocated land along I-95 between Fairfax & Loudoun counties for development into agricultural areas rich in soil resourceschanching horses and other livestock...
