On October 24, 1781, the Continental Congress resolved that “the inhabitants of the present country” should be “armed and organized into a militia to suppress any rising against our government.” The first militias were formed in Virginia on November 3rd and 4th. On December 16th, General Cornwallis reported that he had 1,500 men ready to march against the Patriots. However, Cornwallis went instead to Yorktown to surrender his army to General George Washington. The Battle of Front Royal was fought on April 12-13, 1815 during the War of 1812 between United States forces and British forces. After a hard fight, American troops emerged victorious with only two killed and twelve wounded.
