Front Royal was founded by the Virginia Company in 1626. It is located in Prince William County, Virginias and is known for its white limestone mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains. The town was named after Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Duke of York, who led a failed uprising against King James II of England in 1815. Front Royal is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 97 as of the 2010 United States Census. The first Europeans to visit Front Royal were two Spanish traders, Hernando de Soto and Don Francisco de Miranda, who traveled through the area on their way from Mexico City to Kentucky in 1541. In 1626, the Virginia Company sent an expedition under Captain John Smith to explore the area. Smith's party discovered a large body of water at what is now known as White Sands Point on May 25, 1626. The company designated this location as Front Royal because it had no other suitable name for the site. The first permanent settler at Front Royal was Richard Boyle, Sr., who arrived in 1724. He built his farm on current-day Main Street. Boyle became an important figure in early Virginia society and played an instrumental role in developing tobacco farming into a major industry hereabouts. He also donated land to the town so that it could be developed according to British colonial norms for townships within virginias boundaries at that time. In 1788, Boyle sold his farm and portion thereof east of Main Street to Colonel James Yeates for $10,000 cash plus fees and expenses incurred during surveying or mapping activities associated with Yeates' purchase including construction of a road from Ratcliff Manor via Hagerstown Bridge across Rappahannock River to frontroyerite mines near present day Westover Village on July 4th,. At that time yeates renamedfrontroyerite Mines "Yeates Diamond Mine". It should be noted that some sources claim that frontroyerite Mines may have been established prior to Colonel James Yeates' purchase but this information has not yet been proven correct by any competent researchers!
