Fredericksburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 21,546 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated city in Virginia and the second-smallest city in Hampton Roads after Norfolk. Fredericksburg has been home to many notable people throughout its history including George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. In 1799, General James Wilkinson founded what would become Fredericksburg as a trading post on the Potomac River between Boonesborough and Alexandria. The name of the town comes from General Wilkinson's wife, who named it for her husband's old unit in British India called Fort Frederick on the Monongahela River near modern day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (now known as Fort Duquesne). The first permanent settler in what would become Fredericksburg was Captain John Smith who arrived about 1792. He built a small log cabin on land that now includes much of downtownFredericksburg. A year later he married Anna Maria Pope who had come down from Williamsburg with her father-in-law Colonel Nicholas Pope (1744–1827), one of Governor Thomas Jefferson's advisors and an early advocate of secession from Great Britain during the American Revolution. Her father had been one of twelve men commissioned by Virginius III to capture British military supplies moving upriver through Maryland into Pennsylvania during Lord Dunmore's War (1798–1800). When news reached England that Washington was leading an army against France at Yorktown they ordered their forces to remove all French troops east of Baltimore before winter set in so they could be used against America instead which resulted in more than 5,000 British soldiers being captured trying to escape across North America during this period alone. At some point prior to 1800 Captain Smith left his property which included present day Downtown Fredericksburg for unknown reasons but it likely involved building a new home or moving out of state because there is no evidence remaining today that he ever returned to his original property or settlement hereabouts Captain John Smith may have started construction on what would become Main Street hereabouts around 1800 when he built his first frame house although no records exist verifying this claim In 1802 Reverend Samuel Morse moved into what is now First Baptist Church just south of Market Street where he established a school for African Americans which served as a model for similar schools throughout America including Tuskegee University some 20 years later During this time also Saints Peter & Paul Chapel located just east of Market Street became operational providing education and religious services until 1864 when it burned down due to arson .
