Fredericksburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. The population was 21,829 at the 2010 census. Fredericksburg was founded on December 7, 1777 by Colonel John Brown and his volunteer regiment of riflemen under the command of Lieutenant Colonel William Smallwood. The town was named for General James Edward Fredericks who fought in the American Revolutionary War and helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris which ended that war. The first firearm to be manufactured in what is now Fredericksburg was a flintlock pistol made by Samuel Colt in 1827. A rifle company known as "The Rifle Battalion" was also organized here in 1828 and began manufacturing rifles from local hardwood. In 1840, a large brick buildings were erected on Main Street for the storage and sale of firearms; this building still stands today (along with many other historic buildings in downtown Fredericksburg). This period saw an increasing number of immigrants coming to America, including Germans and Italians who brought their own firearms with them. During the 19th century there was an increase in gun violence throughout Frederick County due to Indians working against white settlers along the Potomac River valley from Pennsylvania all the way down to Virginia; these attacks often resulted in loss or injury (and sometimes death) to both sides involved. The name "Fredericksburg" is from English General James Patterson's 1781 naming of a small town on the Rappahannock River after his father-in-law and commander in chief of British forces in North America, George Washington. The first permanent settlements in what would become Rappahannock County were made by white farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. One of these farms was called "Mansion Hill" because its owner, John Fenton, had built a large mansion there. By 1814, all of present-day Rappahannock County had been settled and named for then-Governor Robert Ewing. In 1818–19, American troops under Lieutenant Colonel James Hays occupied Fort Monroe at the mouth of Yorktown River to prevent British forces from landing and capturing Washington's capital city (present day Norfolk). When Hays left that post in late 1819 due to illness, his replacement Colonel Nathaniel Banks assumed command atFort Monroe. On April 12th 1840, Banks ordered Major General William Tecumseh Sherman to march on Richmond because he felt that Sherman could not be satisfied with merely occupying Petersburg but also wanted to move against Richmond itself as part of his overall strategy for driving back the British army from their holdings in America during the War for Independence. When Confederate troops began disembarking from transports along Elizabeth City Harbor on April 14th followed by artillery fire from Confederate batteries positioned along White House Creek leading upriver toRichmond Center began shelling much larger numbers of Union soldiers garrisoned at Fort Fisher near Portsmouth Naval Yard several miles upstream (now Durham), most likely killed or captured as well as many women and children who were aboard those ships before they were sunk by Confederate gunfire; this event became known as "April 15th Massacre". That night more than 60 Yankees died (of which nearly 30% were civilians) when Union cannonballs foundered into White House Creek just upstream from Fortress Meredith while Rebels machine gunned any living creatures within range including human beings trapped below decks although some survivors managed to swim clear using oars until they reached shore where they hid among friendly prospects until reinforcements arrived and rescue boats got them ashore safe & without loss; This event became known as "May 1st Massacre". Over 2 years later after both sides agreed that it was an accident caused by Federals trying to take aim over an open channel instead of atop an artificial mound Huguenot refugees who had landed there earlier that day started building a brick wall around their encampment which served as fortifications against repeated Federal attack during Reconstruction era until finally being abandoned about 1865 when Union troops burned down the camp & everything inside except for about 40 buildings which still stand today - it has been designated a National Historic Landmark & currently houses various tourist programs including visiting military installations & museums etc... In 1861 when Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army across Shenandoah Valley towards Baltimore through Fredericktown before turning north towards Manassas Junction he learned about large Ulysses S Grant's Army movement south down Ironton Road past Winchester Court House intersection approximately 7 miles southwest via horseback ride (& stopover at Antietam Battlefield) only one mile northeast ofRappahannocksbridge&west Of Fredericksburg whereupon he decided not pursue& returned home... During reconstruction efforts following World War II most Fredricksburg businesses closed but some reopened such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Coca Cola Bottling Company and Pepsi Cola Bottling Company Ruppert Brewing opened up shop again after being shut down during prohibition era Most recently Wrightsville Beach Development Corporation operates a water park adjacent store front located off US Route 460 between Winchester Court House Rd./Route 24 widening access ramps immediately east side access road now available year round
