The first firearms enthusiasts in the United States had to be content with muzzleloading rifles and pistols. However, as muzzleloaders became more powerful and reliable, they also became more popular among shooters. In 1822, a group of gunsmiths in Fredericksburg, Virginia decided to create their own trade organization for muzzleloader shooters. They named this organization the American Rifleman (AR) because their goal was to promote the use of these weapons within the United States. The AR eventually became a major force in firearms regulation and education within America. In 1876, at the height of the Reconstruction period in America, AR meetings convened in Fredericksburg to discuss new firearms regulations that were being proposed by Congress. One such proposal would have made it illegal for any black person to possess a firearm without priorwhite approval. This proposal was met with opposition from many white gun owners who felt that it would infringe on their Second Amendment rights. Despite this resistance, AR passed two resolutions condemning this proposal and reaffirming American Rifleman’s support for free speech and open competition among firearms enthusiasts. Despite its opposition from some white gun ownership groups early on in its history, AR ultimately emerged as one of America’s most influential handgun organizations due to its wide-ranging legislative proliferation throughout the late 19th century and into the 20th century. For example, during Prohibition (1912-1921), AR played an important role in defending Americans’ right to consume alcohol without fear of criminal prosecution or social ostracism. Additionally, over time AR has advocated for greater access to handguns by civilians through education and advocacy while maintaining a strict magazine capacity limit of six rounds per handgun maximum; an innovation which helped make handguns easily available at low cost to consumers throughout much of America during both before and after Prohibition).

The city also served as a training ground for American troops during combat operations in Europe and Asia. In 1932, Thomas Edison designed a pair of monocular goggles called "Edison's Glasses." These goggles were made out of clear plastic and featured a light transmission rate exceeding 100%. They were so successful that they quickly replaced traditional unenclosed sunglasses as Shooter's Eye Protection equipment throughout most armies during World War II. However, despite its success at meeting military requirements, Edison's Glasses failed to catch on with consumers because they were too expensive and limited in range. The late 1970s saw the development of new technologies which allowed Shooter's Eye Protection devices to be manufactured more effectively within budgets constraints - such as digital magnification features which helped increase clarity while keeping costs down; polarized filters which improved Viewing angle; adjustable straps for added comfort; and adjustable temples for perfect fitment even when wearing large glasses. This period also saw significant advancements in optical design including advances in lens coatings and materials which helped reduce glare and improve accuracy when viewing images through Shooter's Eye Protection devices.
