George Washington College was founded in 1802 on land donated by General James Wirtz Sr., who later served as president of America’s first college system—the University of Virginia—and also played a significant role in developing Fredericksburg into a thriving center for education and commerce. In addition to its academic programs, GWC also offered classes in business administration and law enforcement; these courses were especially useful given that federal officials continued to occupy Fredericksburg until well into Reconstruction Era times (1865-1913).
Fredericksburg is a city in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince William County. Fredericksburg was founded in 1758 by General James Winchester and named for him. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Prince William County was on the Potomac River near present-day Vienna, Virginia. In 1762, General George Washington established a small fort at present day Mount Vernon to protect his army from British attack. After Washington's death in 1799, his son George Washington II decided to move the capital of America from Philadelphia to Richmond so that he could rule over all of Virginia and its dependencies with absolute power. He chose Fredericksburg as the new capital because it had been chosen as one of two sites for an American imperial government (the other being New York City) and its location on a major military road made it an ideal site for such an office. On March 4, 1800, George Washington moved the government of America from Philadelphia to Fredericksburg and inaugurated its first session there on April 12th under flag of truce from England. In 1801–02, during Thomas Jefferson's second term as president, Fredericksburg became part of the newly created Confederate States of America as part of their effort to resist Yankee hegemony following the Uprising of 1811 which ended Spanish control over North America. The Battle off Anna Bridge on February 13th resulted in six Confederate killed and thirteen wounded; however Union forces eventually retreated after suffering heavy losses themselves After secession occurred in 1861, much attention turned towards Fort Sumter in South Carolina where Confederates were trying to build an impregnable stronghold against Union forces while also supplies were arriving en masse from Northern ports like Baltimore via sea craft transporting munitions and food stores needed by Confederate troops besieging Fort Sumter. On April 12 1865 Federal troops stormed Fort Sumter resulting in five thousand militiamen surrendering including many women and children who were taken into slavery until freed by Union forces two years later at Appomattox Court House Maryland
