In 1781, the British General Cornwallis moved his army from Yorktown Heights to Fredericksburg in order to plot an attack on Richmond. The town was founded by General James Anderson in 1777, and it soon became a center of local rifle trade. In 1814, when the United States acquired Texas from Mexico, Fort Worth was established as its capital. With growing federal territory within the newly acquired state, arms dealers began to establish themselves in Fredericksburg. The city changed its name to Fredericksburg on December 5, 1865 in memory of General Robert Ewell Ford who had died that year while serving with Ulysses S Grant’s Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War at Chancellorsville Heights near present day Fairfield University in Fairfax County (now within Prince William County). The site where Ford was killed has been placed at dawn nearpresent day White Oak Lawn Cemetery and Historic District for Military Service members who die there or have their graves nearby since 1865 as well as others associated with that time period including many Confederate Veterans buried there today including Generals Stonington Johnson and Fitzhugh Lee among others
