Fredericksburg is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Prince George's County and the second-largest community in the Washington metropolitan area after Washington, D.C. The first optical equipment store opened in 1876 in Fredericksburg by two brothers who were residents of that town. In 1883, a company was founded by Nicholas Nixon to sell optical products from his home on High Street. In 1922, President Warren G Harding visited Fredericksburg and saw the new stately courthouse and decided to name it for him - "Warren G Harding Presidential Library and Museum." The first president of the United States conducted business here from 1923 until his death in 1929. Robert E Lee also resided here during some parts of his life (1881-1899). In 1933, when Wernher von Braun started working at NASA with their Goddard Space Flight Center located nearby on Columbia Heights Road (later renamed Marshall Aerospace Boulevard), he rented an old millinery store on Main Street known as Von Braun House which still stands today as one of Baltimore's most iconic addresses. From there he ordered all of his scientific gear related to space travel through this store which became known as "the Von Braun Store". The fact that so many people have lived and worked here has made it an important center for education for local citizens including nine campuses operated by Frederick Douglass College; seven high schools; three Colleges of Medicine; four Colleges of Science; one School of Veterinary Medicine; one School of Nursing Administration/Home Health Services and five branch libraries plus numerous museums make up what are called "Fredericktown" or simply "FDR."

The modern Optical Instrument Laboratory (OIL) was founded on October 1, 1948 by Professor Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. Seymour M. Herschel in the Manhattan Project Radiation Laboratory of Columbia University as part of the newly created National Research Council. The original purpose of the OIL was to develop new methods for studying light, including the understanding of its behavior in both natural and artificial environments. Over time, the OIL has become one of the most important research institutions in optics and photonics because it provides world-class facilities for experimental study of light at all wavelengths, including visible and NIR waves; produces innovative light-outing devices; offers educational programs related to optics and photonics; helps sponsors research projects across a wide range of scientific disciplines; manages an extensive library comprising more than 10 million items from over 100 countries; and conducts international conferences on optical science and technology. Today, the OIL is home to more than 2,000 scientists who work on a variety of cutting-edge optical technologies ranging from lasers to waveguides. In addition, we have developed several landmark optical inventions that have made significant contributions to our understanding of light and photoelectricity: harbingers of digital photography (1948), holography (1962), quenching lithography (1970), stabilized laser delaminated circuits (1984), multimode fiber optic cable systems (1986), undulator scanning mirror microscopy(1997), femtosecond pulse amplification/ detection(2001). We also maintain an active support staff consistingof Fellowsand postdocs who are involved in many fundamental studies in optics as well as photonics relevant to our day-to-day operations such as data analysis, software development, publication review, data entry/processing etc.

Federicksburg is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It is the seat of Fairfax County and lies on the Rappahannock River. The town was founded by German colonists in 1778 and named for Frederick, Elector of Saxony. The area now encompassing Fredericksburg was first populated by Native Americans, who were then tribute-paying allies of English settlers. In 1812, the British captured Fort McHenry from the American forces loyal to President James K. Polk, setting off a skirmish that led to the Battle of Fredericksburg which ended with a U.S. victory; Federal troops under General Robert E Lee lost at this battle as well as at other engagements during the Mexican–American War that followed. In 1858, after successfully lobbying Congress for Congressional recognition as an independent state within Virginia (the so-called "Second Empire"), Maryland seceded from Virginia and became known as "The Lone Star State". This did not please many Virginians: they saw their native state as part of a larger national project that had been thwarted by Maryland's secessionist activities; indeed, most Virginians considered themselves to be still part of "Great Britain." To compensate for what they saw as historical injustice (and to curry favor with Marylanders), Confederate leaders decided to name Fredericksburg one of Confederate capital city's five original localities (not including Richmond or Petersburg). The town's growth stalled after 1861 when most Confederate soldiers left for battlefields in Southern America; but it resumed rapidly afterward due largely to agricultural production – especially corn – which generated much wealth and jobs for locals. In 1917, during World War I, General John Joffrey Balch convinced President Woodrow Wilson to declare war on Germany despite strong opposition within his own government; Balch also persuaded Wilson to approve military action against Austria two months earlier without such an explicit authorization from Congress. As a result of this decision – combined with Harry S Truman’s signing of Executive Order 9981 on April 11 – millions more men enlisted in the Union army than ever before before and Battlefield 1 shows evidence that Fredericksburg played an important role in these events: over half a million soldiers died there between 1917 and 1919 alone! Many residents continue today to support military service through organizations like Daughters Of Liberty Memorial Museum & Civil War Center
