In 1865, during the American Civil War, Fredericksburg was one of two Union towns that remained loyal to the Union despite significant patriotic sentiment in much of the area. After the war, Fredericksburg slowly regained its former prominence as an industrial center, and in recent decades it has been home to a number of high-profile political figures including U.S. Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Harry Reid (D-NV).

However, after the war ended there was much rejoicing as many residents returned to their rebuilds which began right away. In 1978, Mayor Frank Cinque resigned after being caught dealing drugs while under influence of alcohol while running for office – an event he would later apologize for. He was replaced by his Vice Mayor Dick Dickey who served until 2000 when he retired due to health reasons In 2000 City Manager Don White left to take over from then Mayor Rick Yarborough who had been elected earlier that year . Yarborough would serve until 2006 when he also retired due to health reasons . In 2006 City Manager Don White left for another position within the county government . Reverend Terence Naylor took over as interim city manager until May 2009 when he resigned due to term limits
