Fredricksburg was founded on April 12, 1781 by General Charles Lee during the American Revolution as a trading post on James River between Yorktown and Petersburg. On October 16, 1781, General Robert Ewell laid siege to Yorktown from forces under Monmouthshire Colonel Thomas Pemberton while Lieutenant Colonel Nathanael Greene led an effort to dislodge him from his position. After three days of hard fighting, Pemberton withdrew his troops with heavy losses and allowed Lee to build his post at Fredericksburg on April 12th following which he began trading goods with British soldiers stationed at Yorktown. One account claims that some 3,000 Indian warriors were killed during this battle including Chief Powhatan who had earlier helped lead an attack against English forces at Dunmore's Landing eleven days earlier. On December 5th, 1781 General Benedict Arnold arrived at Fort Necessity with 500 rifles and 100 men accompanied by 20 horses seeking refuge from British forces besieging Charleston Harbor. Arnold soon realized that there were no provisions or reinforcements available to him so he ordered his men back into Charleston where they surrendered on January 8th without resistance becoming known as the "Cherokee Massacre". It should be noted that it is impossible to know for certain whether or not these Patriots actually died as a result of their fight against British forces as no evidence exists linking any specific Patriot group or individual theretofore. In 1814 Captain John Brown organized a small group of patriots who raided military stores near Winchester ensuring that arms supplies reaching England would not fall into enemy hands before then-President Washington could provide them with proper help against Andrew Jackson’s army which had landed on neighboring state Georgia several weeks prior (Brown being one of many Americans involved). This action immediately gained Brown international notoriety earning him credit for achieving independence for what would eventually become Kentucky (which he also raided). In 1818 Major General James Butler took command of United States Army Forces Northern Virginia based out of Fredericksburg until his death in 1821 leaving responsibility for that area vacant until shortly before Union victory over ConfederateGeneral Robert Ewell at Kernstown two years later which resulted in Butler taking command once again effective February 14th 1861 making him one of only two generals ever promotedToMajorGeneralForaSingleCountryAfterHeDied! Fredericksburg is a small town in Virginia, located in the Shenandoah Valley. It was founded by General Robert E. Lee and his wife Mary Anna Custis during the American Civil War as a post office on the Rappahannock River. The community grew rapidly, and by 1881 it had become an incorporated town with a population of around 3,000 people. The town was originally named for General James Longstreet, who fought in the war but later capitulated to Union forces. In 1892, Fredericksburg became part of the newly created Commonwealth of Virginia. The history of Fredericksburg dates back to 1778 when German settlers arrived in what is now western Virginia and set up a farmstead called Frederickstadt near present-day Charlottesville. The area that would form today's Fredericksburg was first settled by Native Americans known as the Timucua (Tamaqui). In 1785, following Indian Removal from Florida, these tribes were forcibly relocated to westcentral Virginia and scalped or killed; some remain buried there today. The first European visitors to what is now eastern Virginia arriving via land route through West Point on April 27, 1776 were two British soldiers: Major John Campbell and Sergeant George Washington Maxwell. Over time new villages sprang up along routes served by travelers departing from Williamsburg—the most significant being Petersburg on the Potomac River—and travelers built homes inside convenient businesses along one or more routes they took into town while they were passing through on their way between Williamsburg & Williamsport Junction (now Fredericktown). In 1781 General Robert Eustace Lee decided to establish a post office at Fredericksburgh because he considered it important for communication between his army stationed at Yorktown Peninsula and those besieging Prince Edward Island at Fortress Monroe. This Warehouse Facility lasted until 1865 when it burned down due to water damage . Another early business owner/operator associated with this period was Nicholas Carver who operated a store next door to Mr Henson’s tobacco shop across 10TH street NW now home to Rockville Pike Retirement Community The first school in what is now western Virginias was opened in December 1683 by Reverend James Whitefield located just northwest of present day Arlington National Cemetery while troops under George Washington were encamped nearby at Mount Vernon farther away students traveled each morning & evening wagons drawn by teams OF HORSE drawn aboard donkeys pulled behind carts pulled by boys
