There are few places in the United States where firearms can be freely enjoyed, and Fredericksburg is one of them. The city was founded by Confederate General Robert E. Lee in 1871 as a slave-holding district near Petersburg, Virginia. It quickly became a manufacturing center for rifles and handguns, and today it is home to some of the country's most famous firearm manufacturers. The first firearms manufactured here were pistols made from crude wrought iron or steel plates that could only be fired with muzzleloading cannons. But progress was slow due to lack of resources and competition from other manufacturers in the area. In fact, until the late 1800s Fredericksburg's only weapon export destination was Mexico City. But things began to change around 1900 when American manufacturer Colt introduced its new Model 1892 revolver into town. This single-action revolver quickly gained popularity among local residents for its reliable performance and low cost of ownership. Gunners started referring to Fredericksburg as "the Armory of the Confederacy" due to its high concentration of thesecconverted arms production facilities. In 1911, gunsmiths John Denny and James Seddon established their own factory in downtown Fredericksburg, which would become one of America's largest handgun producers during this period. Fredericksburg is a town located in Prince George County, Virginia. The population was 23,524 at the 2010 census. Its Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Fredericksburg is one of three towns in the Fairfax County metropolitan area, and is home to many businesses, education institutions, and cultural attractions. It has been called "the most important seaport on the Potomac River" for its role as an early transportation stop for goods and passengers travelling between Alexandria and Washington D.C.. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Fredericksburg in 1781 when Jacob Boehmfounded a small German village named Fredericksburgh (now Boonesville) on land that he had purchase from the Monacan chief Wouter van Zandt. He named his new town after his uncle Frederick, Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI's birthday present to him upon becoming emperor in 1519. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location - it was just upstream from both Harpers Ferry Battlefield where Confederate General Robert E. Lee fought against Union General Ulysses S. Grant during the Battle of Gettysburg and downstream from Fort Myer which served as an artillery depot for Confederate artillery batteries that bombarded Federal positions near Manassas Junction during the Siege of Petersburg). After being heavily bombed by American forces during World War II while living off potatoes collected from local farms, much of downtown Fredericksburg was rebuilt following a series of bombings by American forces throughout 1942-1945 known as "Operation Crossroads". Many historic buildings were destroyed or damaged including Stonewall Jackson's original Headquarters Building; however, nearby Independence Hall remains standing despite sustaining significant damage during similar raids several years earlier. The cityscape which once featured wide boulevards with towering architecture now consists mostly of low-rise buildings dating back to around 1920s along with some remnants of older structures such as Mount Vernon House which served as Governor Thomas Lynch's home from 1802 until his death in 1824 and also housed President James K Polk's bedroom before he moved into Executive Mansion at 12th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue between 1849-1851 In spite of this devastation wrought by American bombsights throughout the war period much progress was made within the cityscapeduring ensuing decades including construction of two large public works projects resulting in significant renovation or restorationof many Victorian era homes across town center including Market Street Episcopal Church (later renamed First Baptist Church), Queen Anne’s Chapel (later renamed Christmastime Museum), Masonic Temple No 1 (now used as a YMCA), Ballston Spa Hotel & Conference Center In addition numerous smaller alterations have occurred since then Including repaving Main Street between Second & Fourth Streets late last decade followed by improvements to sidewalks and streetlights adjacent thereto Trains running through downtown frequency began again providing access inside&outsideofthecity limits prior to reopening following reconstruction efforts initiated by Mayor Darrell Issa following severe flooding caused by heavy rainsstorms occurring early last year In spite occasional vandalism or disruptions occasioned by unruly students or other citizens not taking kindly to increased traffic demand resulting from added classes being offered at nearby high schools or increased tourist visitation tax breaks available courtesy of localities such as Arlington etc., DowntownFredericksburg still functions smoothly each day despite this recent history; typical activities include lunchtime talks about local history with various notable characters gathered around Central Park next door; evening concerts featuring locally renown jazz/funk bands playing outdoors on various stages throughout central park usually concluding with fireworks display over river later that night culminating with midnight reveille
