Fredericksburg is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, about 25 miles west of the City of Richmond and about 35 miles east of Lynchburg. At that time there were no roads or railroads within reach so trade depended upon horseback riding or wading through rapids on the river's course to bring goods important for subsistence such as potatoes, tobacco, flour and other supplies to market. By 1800 Frederick had become one of several small settlements along the James River valley with a population under 100 people including: New Market (now Manassas), Middlebrook (now Harrisonburg), Hopewell (now Roanoke) and Thamesville (later called Germanna). These frontier communities soon developed into larger towns with businesses extending beyond their original boundaries due to advances in transportation technology which made it possible for merchants to carry goods long distances without having to stop at each village or hamlet on their way home. The Battle of Fredericksburg took place near present day Fredericksburg on November 11th 1862 while Confederate forces were trying unsuccessfully to drive Union troops out of town before they could make plans for an assault on Chancellorsville two days later. Confederate General Robert Ewell led 5200 men against 10 000 Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant who fought bravely but ultimately lost 63% of his force killed or wounded although he did manageTo capture two Union cannons which provided significant artillery support for Confederate forces during their campaign against Ulysses S Grant’s army at Chancellorsville Although outnumbered 2 – 1 by Union forces commanded by General Ulysses S Grant LtGen Joseph Hooker decided not to order any frontal assaults against these numerically superior enemy positions instead he ordered his cavalrymen only “to hurl down some square stones at them from behind cover” this failed operation resulted in heavy casualties among both sides with Confederates suffering more than 1000 dead while Federals lost just 6 soldier killed and wounded

The city's importance increased during the American Revolution when it became one of the most important Revolutionary battlegrounds in Virginia. In 1775, General George Washington stopped at Fredericksburg on his way to join forces with General Howe against British forces in North America.
