The town began as a small community on the Potomac River near what is now called Falls Church Mall. A dam was built there to power sawmills and other mills in the early 1800s. When this mill closed, Falls Church grew quickly due to its proximity to Richmond. In 1825, James Monroe founded a school in Fallsmere which became known as "Monroe's School". By 1830, it had becomeFallsmere Academy. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson announced his intent to build a new national capital on Mount Vernon Hill and recommended that Congress choose FallsChurch as the site for that new capital. The residents of Fallsmere voted against moving their school to Mount Vernon and decided instead to build their own academy there. The first building of Fallsmere Academy was built on North Capitol Street in 1835-36 by local farmers who donated land for the school In 1850, after numerous moves from fallsphere until finally settling permanently at 571 feet (170 m) above sea level on Potomac Riverbank just north of present day Washington Dc., students from Monroe's School walked into classes at Fallsmere Academy – one of only two public schools located within Alexandria city limits then (the other being Alexandria Military Academy). Classes were held at three different locations before eventually settling permanently here in 1860 when nearby Arlington opened its doors also serving students from Monroe's School A second building was completed on North Capitol Street between 15th and 17th Streets NW by 1862 following generous donations by citizens including real estate developer Elias Howe Howe Jr..
