American Optical Corporation closed its doors in 1984 but their legacy lives on through their sister company American Opticals Incorporated which still operates today as a full-service optical retailer and distributor located in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Falls Church is part of the Washington metropolitan area and is one of two counties in VA that make up the regionally significant Washington-Baltimore-National Capital Area (WBA). The first permanent European settler in what would become FallsChurch was Captain John Smith who landed on Roanoke Island in 1607. In 1785, General James McHenry's army invaded Virginia and took Fallstown without battle or resistance from local militia led by Colonel Nathanael Greene. The commander-in-chief's headquarters were at Williamsburg then moved to Alexandria after victory at Saratoga Creek where General George Washington held court with his officers on December 12, 1787. In 1801 House Resolution No. 597 authorized President James Ketchum to lay out a road from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg and named it "George Washington Boulevard." On January 3, 1802 Governor Robert Ewell recommended that fallow land be acquired for cultivation around Prince William County courthouse as part of an act to create Arlington Heights which became Fairfax County when it was formed from parts of Prince William and Loudoun counties in 1871. In 1865 General Ulysses S. Grant had arrived at Gettysburg Army Headquarters during the American Civil War when he ordered Major General Winfield Scott's cavalry brigade under Colonel Franklin Averell to raid through Fairfax County into southern Maryland looking for Confederate forces caches caches arms ammunition etc.. This proposal failed but later changed to honor Virginian Secretary of War Robert Ewell who died suddenly May 14th 1805 after leading an attack against Seminole Indian Chief Muscogee Nation encampment at Moneta creek also known as Battle Abbey which resulted in large loss forEwell's force . After Morris death settlement grew rapidly but duelling frequent among early settlers over trading goods items such as saltpeter & tobacco Benjamin Rush decided Shenandoah Valley should be divided between Philadelphia & Richmond based on strategic location considerations effective November 26th 1781 Accordingly Bill Northey submitted bill proposing creation of county within WBAR designatedfallsmarchcounty believingthat county existence will promote social order thereby contributing financially to state coffers
