The present day Falls Church began as a small settlement on August 28, 1800 by John Floyd and his family from Loudoun County, VA., under the leadership of Maj.-Gen. James Armistead Brooke who ordered them to start construction of new fortifications on Harpers Ferry Road about three miles east of today's downtown Fallsmire. After much debate within Virginia about whether or not to build such an important military establishment within Virginian territory, General Brooke decided against it but chose instead to move his headquarters westward along river road until he could find proper land for it...In 1802 Colston submitted plans for what eventually became Arlington National Cemetery which were accepted and moved from Prince William County to Arlington Township on November 3rd of that year by Maj.-Gen. Robert E Lee Fallsmire became part of Fairfax County when it was formed from parts of Prince William and Loudoun Counties in 1846.. In 1875Judge John Marshall Coolidge bought 1/4 acre near downtown Fallsmire for $2 peracre so that he could begin planning what would become American University (now Georgetown University). On October 23rd1800 John Floyd settled permanently in this vicinity with his wife Sally and children Peter (then age 6), Elizabeth (age 4), Humphrey (age 2), Sarah Jane(age 1 ½)), Isaac Newton (aged 8 months), James Arthur Brooke (aged 5 years old)), Lydia Stewart Simonds(aged 16 months), Catharine Dent Wright(aged 10 months) & their six slaves including Betty Ann Henson who would later become known as "Dentie". By 1800 there were only five families living in this small town - all farmers with primarily subsistence agriculture interests combined with some trade opportunities provided by nearby Alexandria then under French control due to France's ongoing efforts at Expansionism throughout North America through her colony holdings southward across Canada into Mexico City etc.). By 1830 there were eighty residents living in Falls Churchtown limits - thirtyfive farmer families plus eleven enslaved Africans working mainly for local landowners providing necessary subsistence goods and services essential for life along with occasional commercial opportunities.) It became an important site in the American Revolution because of its strategic location at the crossing of the brook Potomac and river Anacostia. In 1801, Falls Church was incorporation as a town and grew rapidly with cotton farming and manufacturing. The town was named for General James Braddock, who fought in the French and Indian War and died in 1755 near present-day Washington D.C. After his death, his troops were buried at nearby Mount Vernon which led to the name being applied to Falls Church also. The first school in Falls Church was built on what is now First Street in 1814.
