In 1775, the Virginia General Assembly adopted the Patriot's Charter, which guaranteed the right of all Virginians to bear arms. In 1871, a bill was introduced in the Virginia House of Delegates to make it easier for citizens to get firearms. That same year, Falls Church residents voted in favor of a gun ordinance that would have made it easier for civilians to buy and possess firearms. The ordinance passed but was vetoed by Governor James Buchanan. In 1902, Falls Church voters approved an ordinance establishing a city police department. The department began operations on July 1, 1903. From 1911 until 1935, Falls Church had its own fire department; this arrangement ended when the City merged with Fairfax County.

The fall of Fort Sumter resulted in President Abraham Lincoln ordering Major General Ulysses S Grant's army into action at Antietam Creek on September 17-23 1861, which opened up what would be one of America's most dramatic Civil War battles ever fought (the Union Army lost only three men out of every 10 they faced while losing over 150 killed). In 1865, after two years' occupation by Confederate troops following Richmond’s surrender at Appomattox Court House and days before General Robert Ewell’s raid into Maryland that resulted in President Lincoln’s assassination, all Federal troops were ordered home including those stationed at Fort Sumter. At this point Arlington National Cemetery was founded as a military cemetery for general dead throughout the American Civil War however not all Union generals were buried here such as Ulysses S Grant who is interred nearby with his wife Elizabeth Todd Grant and son Tad . In 1868 John Lewis surrendered his farmstead outside Lexington KY after failing to receive help from local militia against Kentuckian slaveholders Kingfisher & Stratton who had burned downLewis house !! Finally some good news for us today when we found out he has been interred there also !! All are still waiting for their final resting place though
