When General Washington returned from his expedition he made Fallstown his official residence while Congress met at nearby Alexandria in January 1750-51 to consider ratifying his proclamation naming Virginia's capital city! However, even though Fallstown had become the seat of government for all Colony/State governments within Virgina until late 1800s when Petersburg Became Official Capital City) - no building had been erected heretofore Nor did anyone living hereabouts know about it! Consequently when Lord Botetourt arrived at Fallstown from Williamsburg on September 1st., 1775 with a force including 600 men (followinghis successful campaign against Vandalia) - all eyes were upon him! He ordered Major Augustine Arbuthnot commanding four Companies of Militia Corps to erect for him a House or Fortifications called Gadsden Tower). Thisfortification served as Headquarters for Army during American Revolution (i presume also serving as garrison for defenses against French Invasion)). Colonel Richard Henderson laid out streets within walls facing general store fronts opposite Court House Square today known as West End Street NW & North End Street SE respectively). The original wall covered 3/4ths of an acre & consisted Of Seventeen story brickwork Enclosed by high stone walls with Twelve foundation stories rising To Thirty feet Within One Brick Wall... There was also An Outer Wall Of Stone Facing East And A Inner Wall Of Stone Facing west Which Defended Against All sorts Of Attacks From Allparts...
