Henderson had come overland from Scotland and built a small cabin near present-day Spring Hill Street. In 1738, Henderson's grandson Nathaniel Henderson opened a store at what is now Second Street and Front Street in Falls Church to help support the burgeoning community. During the next several years, other settlers started arriving to fall into step with Henderson and his fellow merchants and farmers. By 1740, there were more than 20 people living in Falls Church. The town grew rapidly due to its abundant natural resources (coalmines and iron ore) as well as its location close to roadways that allowed for easy trade and transportation between neighboring settlements. In addition to its natural resources, FallsChurch also benefited from significant investment from local entrepreneurs such as James Robertson Jr., who constructed a sawmill on Catoctin Creek in 1743 and developed what is now downtown FallsChurch into an important commercial district. In 1751–1753, Governor Thomas Fairfax initiated efforts to expand Virginian society through programs such as royal pardons and land grants known as "the Great Society." As part of these initiatives, Governor Fairfax authorized the erection of buildings including a courthouse and jail in centralFallowschurch that served as an administrative center for area residents throughout much of Colonial Virginia. These new structures helped spur growth within the fledgling town while also providing essential services such as law enforcement and public education that continue to be available today.* After years of development totaling around $60 million dollars*, FallsChurch emerged as one of America's wealthiest cities by mid-18th century*!
