Located just south of Great House Road on Potomac River near present-day Friendship Heights, Alexandria quickly became an important center where goods were transported by boat downriver before being unloaded on Jones Island then carted across river to be stored until shipped downriver again In 1801 Alexandria merchants with William Thornton organized what was called "the first railroad in America", connecting Baltimore andWashington along what would later become known as Washington Boulevard. This development led to increased trade between Falls Church and other parts of Northern Virginia including Baltimore and Richmond which contributed significantly to Falls Church becoming both an economic powerhouse during Colonial times while also maintaining strong social ties throughout much of rural Northern Virginia It wasn't until 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln chose Falls Church as site for Arlington National Cemetery which gave FallsChurch even more prominence within American society It wasn't until 1933 that Arlington National Cemetery opened its doors to all Americans regardless race or ethnicity making it one of the most diverse national cemeteries in history As time passed these changes continued - ArlingtonNational Cemetery began accepting military members who had served in World War II (1946) while also admitting their spouses (1971) thereby allowing mulatto residents living adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery their own cemetery separate from white residents living inside Greater Washington
