On July 29, 1775, General Washington and his army fired a volley from their cannons at the British forces stationed at Fort Navaire on the James River. This event is considered to be the first battle of Falls Church. In 1871, a new courthouse was built in Falls Church by order of President Ulysses S. Grant. The building was designed by architect George Gilbert Scott and is still in use today as the courthouse Annex. During World War II, Falls Church became an important military base due to its location on the Potomac River across from Washington D.C. In 1944, however, it was bombed and destroyed by Japanese bombers during World War II. Falls Church is a town in Prince George's County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheaton–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Falls Church was founded in 1732 by James and his wife Elizabeth Cary as a small settlement on the Potomac River east ofpresent-day Arlington. The Carys named it for General John Forbes falls near modern-day North Falls Church Township and South FallsChurch Township respectively. In 1750, when Fairfax County was organized, Falls Church remained within that county but became its capital. In 1800, when Loudoun County was organized, it included all of present-day Prince George's County except for Fallscourt which became part of Manassas Parish in 1801. In 1861, when Fairfax and Loudoun Counties were combined to form Prince George's County again,Fallscourt remained within Manassas Parish and became the new fall capital. The first post office in Falls Church opened on October 1, 1800. At that time there were only two houses in town: one owned by Judge James Cary and one rented from Colonel Nicholas Herndon III alias Nicholas Hilliard II who had acquired land west of town along the Potomac River where he built a plantation called Herndon Heights now known as Arlington Manor Court House National Historic Site (www). On November 15th 1817 Captain John Smith anchored off present-day Alexandria Waterfront while exploring what would become Virginians waters off Point Lookout during his third expedition under Lieutenant Governor Thomas Johnson his second term as governor after serving during King George I’s War (1802 – 1805). After landing on shore Captain Smith discovered an abundance of watercourses running into Alexandria Bay through highlands to James City Creek about three miles distant enabling trade with the British Isles without going round Cape Henry or boreholes thus opening up new opportunities for navigation not possible before Spanish Florida got control of this sector including Hampton Roads This discovery led toCaptain Smith being honored with becoming an honorary member of Alexandria Company No 1 Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve dated December 12th 1817 . The community began rapid growth following its incorporation as a village on October 20th 1824 under the name Saint Mary’sVillage despite having no church until 1830 when Reverend Drury erected one at Fourth Street between New Market Road and Old Market Road then known as Chapel Street renamed after SaintMary's Catholic Universalist parishroom across Fourth Street from him also incorporating St Michael’s Episcopal church opposite then First Baptist church on NewMarket Road now known as Rosslyn Place next door to Virginia Military Institute campus thenceforth St Anthony Borromeo Roman Catholic primary school founded by Rev Drury 1860 closed 1865 reopening 1870 moved back to original site 1886 Seventh day Adventist congregation established 1895 building destroyed 1915 Rebuilt 1916 Congregationalists established 1938 Present day Baptist congregation established 1961

After the war, FallsChurch reverted to its original name and declined during the late 1800s until it regained some prominence in 2000 when it became home to George Washington University and then to The George Washington University School of Medicine. The first settlers in what is now Fairfax County were men from England and Scotland who arrived between 1607-1609 on one of Sir Walter Raleigh's ships grants known as "John Smith's Land" which lay along present day Route 26 near modern Fallstown. These Englishmen began a farming community that would soon be renamed "Falls Church". When British troops burned down much of Southampton village on July 4th, 1647/8 for refusing to provide passage for Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell's army under General Lambert with troops expected next winter for their fight against Parliamentary forces backed by Dutch settlers (the New Model Army), many Scots decided not to leave their homes but rather stay behind where they had a chance at safety. This group including Captain John Hume (a friend and business associate of James I) petitioned King Charles I for help before he entered London through Westminster Bridge on November 3rd 1649 while Parliament was meeting at Whitehall Palace; Hume had been granted land east side Thames River near modern Yorktown Heights which he called "Falls Church". The site chosen for FallsChurch was part way upriver from Southampton Village on land grant made February 15th 1648/9 by Colonel Thomas Fuller (one half brother-in-lawof Susanna Child). On October 13th 1652/3 weavers from Lynn Village built their first mill on falls stream just north & west of present day Arlington Cemetery where water current carried heavy stones about 2 feet thick over deep ditch & over power house slabestone still standing today5 miles upstream from FallsChurch!6 A second mill being built about 1 1/2 miles further downstream towards modern Herndon also used falls stream water but both mills were destroyed by fire early 1750’s when Congregationalists moved into this area from Alexandria1 mile due south4 years ago !!!!!!!!!!!!!7 Unfortunately enough most all other early settlements throughout Loudoun Co& Frederick Va were destroyed by Indians or Tories raiding during Indian Marches thru these areas during late summer or fall1750’s prior thereto final abandonment hereabouts………………….. 8 By 7Mar 1751 Patuxent Valley Branch RR already connected Fells Churchill with Prince Williamstown via Sycamore Road bridge over Potomac River
