One such store was opened by George Hargrave on Main Street in 1851. By 1861, there were twenty-five such stores across rural VA alone. Ammunition played an important role during World War II because it helped keep millions of soldiers safe and enabled them to victory against Nazi Germany and Japan. Falls Church is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 20,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Falls Church was incorporated on November 3, 1814 as a result of the merger of two other settlements–Falls Church and Westfall–in what is now Fairfax County. The town's first settler was Samuel Fallows, but it was not until 1824 that he donated land for the creation of what is now the Falls Church Cemetery. On December 15, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces at Falling Sun Hill outside of Falls Church while Fort Monroe garrisoned nearby. The attack resulted in heavy losses for both sides and helped convince President Abraham Lincoln to order Ulysses S. Grant to send additional troops to support the Union cause in Northern Virginia after months of indecision. In 1865 and again in 1868-69, Confederates unsuccessfully attacked Union forces near Westfall and Holyoke Roads in eastern Fairfax County; these attacks were considered attempts by them to create a crossroads connecting Confederate territory with those located west of Washington D.C.. In 1870-71 Union General John Jumper advanced through central Fairfax County towards Fallstown; this attack halted his march and forced him to turn around briefly before continuing on his way. Confederate General Jubal Early also attempted an assault against Union forces at Great Meadows southeast of Alexandria on July 2nd 1863 but failed due to lack of reinforcement from upstream along I-495 (the " Progress Line"). The collapse of Reconstruction following World War II left FallsChurch with few industrial or commercial opportunities aside from small agriculture since most residents worked within commuting distance either as farmers or teachers outside the community or inside government buildings such as Fairfax Station Elementary School which functioned as one large school until 1992 when it became an academy prep school known today as James Madison High School
Falls Church was founded in 1771 by James Falls, who named it for his father-in-law, Colonel John Forbes. The town grew quickly, and in 1812 the General Assembly designated it a city. In 1821 the Commonwealth of Virginia granted Falls Church city status and incorporation. The first mayor was John Epps. In 1861 Confederate forces attacked the town, and several buildings were destroyed. The Union army arrived soon afterward and took control of the town. After the war, Falls Church became an important center for business and politics in Virginia. In 1865 it was renamed Washington DC after President Abraham Lincoln.
