One of FallsChurch's most famous residents was Confederate general Robert E Lee who spent his early childhood there before moving to Lexington to attend college where he met Union general Ulysses S Grant. After being discharged from Fort Sumter following his surrender at Appomattox Court House, Lee moved back to Richmond where he resumed command of Confederate forces until his death during battle atop Kelly Hill near Petersburg on April 9 1865
