Fairfax, Virginia is a town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C.–Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Fairfax was first settled by English colonists in 1624 and incorporated as a town on February 14, 1871. In 1978, it became the county seat of Fairfax County. The land that now makes up Fairfax was long inhabited by the Powhatan people who built their villages on two hills near present-day Arlington Cemetery and George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The English colonists arrived in 1624 and began to settle around Frederick Church Hill on what is today Loudoun Street within what is nowFairfax Town Center (the original name for the town). They named their new home "Farragut" after Admiral Sir John Farragut, who had commanded British forces during the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1781. By 1685, much of what later comprise Fairfax had been developed as part of Prince William County under Colonel John Smith's leadership with several small settlements scattered throughout Prince William and Montgomery counties (now Westmoreland and Arlington counties). One early resident of Fairfax was Lt.-Colonel Thomas Walker who served with Captain Christopher Newport's crew along with others on board HMS " Adventure ". He married Anne Botkin in December 1586 aboard her flagship while blockading Jamestown Bay; they had one child, Mary Walker (baptized October 10, 1587 – d January 21, 1651), daughter of Captains John Gaston and Nicholas Botkin. Anne Walker died two years before her husband did when she fell from a height while playing against Native Americans at Tappahannock Creek near modern day Reston Junction outside Chantilly Township; she may have been killed or slavery took her life because no record exists to support this claim. In 1784-85 Colonel Robert Ewell led an expedition against Pocomoke Indians at Potomano Lake where he destroyed their village which has become known as Ewell's Fort. This event inspired James Webb to document American Indian antiquities when he traveled through America during his doctoral dissertation research at Princeton University in 1905-06 according to his personal recollections: "I found out about these potomac Indians from my friend General James Webb who had made some very careful investigations among them...I went more than once into those parts [Pocomoke] but could never find anything worth taking." According to historian Donald Acheson it seems probable that Webb caught germs from some Pocomoke women upon his return journey back to England so he knew about native medicines which might have saved many lives if not for disease introduced by European settlers: "Webb probably brought back useful plants not only from his brief visit but also from other explorations that he undertook subsequently.'" So although there were initial negative reactions due largely to misconceptions aroused by Captain Newport’s Discovery Expedition - including charges leveled against him by Patriot leaders such as Patrick Henry - eventually scientific curiosity won over nationalistic prejudices towards Native Americans., Consequently local communities grew up around military installations such as Fort Meade (present day Arlington National Cemetery) and Alexandria Naval Shipyard while independent farmers continued producing tobacco until around 1830.. This situation changed abruptly after war broke out between Britain and France in 1812 resulting in British troops invading North America.: Many Virginians opposed this invasion mainly because they saw it as another example of English imperialism vs French colonialism.; However general westward expansion proceeded apace regardless even though most Virginians did not share these views;; After independence occurred most Virginians chose sides consequently leading to significant social changes especially within aristocratic circles;; Aftermath included waves of immigration culminating withITEople settling throughout western VA primarily due to cheap labor opportunities offered by newly formed U S Congress.; Today much older properties richly restored remain within boundaries defined when Potomac River valley became part ofVA following Appomattox Court Martial massacre""

After British forces destroyed Fort Necessity on Yorktown Heights in 1676 during Bacon's Rebellion against James I by means unknown but probably arson - an event sometimes referred to as "the Destruction" - Lord Dunmore gave land grants throughout much of northern Virginia to settlers who would build homes there including those at Fallstown (now known as Reston), Boxcar Hill (now known as Lorton), Herndon Hills (now known as Sterling), Old North Roadhouse Estate (near Herndon Township today) between Manassas Junction and Fredericksburg Junction where it crossed Rappahannock Creek now called Loudoun County Line then became Fairfax; all this land lay within present-day Arlington County except some portions lying within Loudoun County proper outside its boundaries until 1923 when that eastern portion was annexed by Arlington
