Fairfax, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 101,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Fairfax County and one of the most populous towns in Virginia. The town boundaries were established by an act of the General Assembly on January 25, 1792. The growth of Fairfax began modestly with only two houses built in 1792. By 1800 there were twenty-one homes and ten businesses in this small village on the north side of Alexandria Roads near modern day Reston Roads. In 1802, three more houses were built and soon there were thirty-six residents living within a five-mile radius of what would become Fairfax Towne Centre (later called simply "Fairfax"). In 1804, four more homes been added to the original group - this time for eighty people! This rapid growth led to annexation by Arlington County in 1836 and then byVirginia City in 1851 – making Fairfax one of America's first "incorporations". With its rich cultural history dating back centuries as well as its growing economy – including many textile mills that have left their mark on Fairfax – it was no surprise that when Congress created plans for national reservations along the Potomac River Valley during World War II, many local farmers saw an opportunity to build roads into their property so they could service military installations and provide employment for defense workers. The community has prospered ever since thanks to its close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Washington D.C., Bethesda, Maryland Heights and Crystal City; access to quality education; secure facilities; state-of-the art banking technology; easy street access; recreation opportunities available; perpetuation of strong family values – all which have helped make Fairfax a vibrant community today.

Fairfax is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was founded in 1751 by Captain John Smith as part of the Colony of North America. The community grew up around the Fairfax Roads, which connected Williamsburg and Alexandria. The first store in Fairfax opened in 1824. In 1857, the town became an incorporated village. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1925 and decreased to about 50,000 by 1950. However, it has since grown again and reached its current population of about 70,000. The town was originally named for George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel James Blandford Fairfax (1711–1784). He donated land to the town on which it stands and built a courthouse and several other buildings there. One resident recalls that "George Washington visited our small town frequently during his lifetime." The original post office operated from 1800 to 1825; however, it was moved to its present location near Loudoun Road in 1925. After World War II the economy declined rapidly due to lack of jobs in rural Virginia; however, growth has resumed recently with the opening of new businesses and development of new neighborhoods such as Fayetteville Park and Reston Town Center. Today many people identify with Fairfax because of its rich history - including some who trace their ancestry back more than two centuries!
In 1734, the first permanent white settlement in what is now Fairfax County was established by Captain John Smith and his men on the site of present-day Crystal City. The area that became Fairfax was part of the Province of Virginia until 1776, when it became part of the newly formed United States of America. In 1831, a surveyor general named George Washington surveyed and laid out the new county lines which are still in use today. The original name for Fairfax was "Queen's County."
