Fairfax, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 71,746 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in the county by population and has been the location of all but one of the county's 7 townships since 1800. The first European settlement in Fairfax was made by Captain George Washington and his men on October 25, 1775 when they left Mount Vernon to explore new land over which they would rule as George Washington had instructed them. The area that now includes Fairfax was part of Prince William County until 1801 when it became part of Fairfax County. In 1821, Arlington County was formed from parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties. According to tradition, General Robert Ewell built Fort Monroe here on an artificial peninsula after he captured Petersburg during the American Revolution. He named the fort "Fort Alexandria" because he thought it would be more difficult for British forces to move troops into or out of Alexandria than other sites in Virginia Beach (now called Hampton). The fort served as a military post throughout most of Richmond's initial period as an English colony before becoming home to Confederate officers during the American Civil War. In 1865 it became Union Station for southern railway passengers coming through Richmond before being abandoned finally in 1923 due to lack of use and then demolition following World War II although some remaining timbers remain visible today within view of visitors at Marine Corps Base Quantico . There have been several attempts over time to reconstruct what happened at Fort Alexandria including efforts led by author Michael Shaara who spent five months living near Fort Alexandria while researching his book "Alexandria: A History". On July 5th-6th, 2009 a team from Real Steel Incorporated reconstructed portions along with reconstructing most if not all buildings inside Fort Alexandria which can be seen from Interstate 95 just outside Quantico Naval Air Station . This event marked a milestone for archaeology as well as history as it was also one possible beginning point for future reconstruction projects like what is currently happening at Marine Corps Base Quantico where various pieces such as cannons are still standing today completed long ago only awaiting restoration/replacement
