The family owned a large estate on Foxhall Plantation, which they used as a summer home and wintering ground for their members. The Fairfaxes played an important role in American politics throughout its history. They were prominent Republicans who served as senators from 1783 to 1797 and again from 1800 to 1801. In addition, General George Washington appointed both James Logan and John Randolph as commissioners to manage the western Boundaries Commission of 1786-87, which helped create modern-day Virginia. After the death of Captain John Fairfax Jr., his wife Martha took over running the property while her son George continued to make strategic decisions about it. In 1814, Martha died suddenly at age 71; three years later, her son George married Emily Dickinson Hopper (1809-1892). After growing up together on Foxhall Plantation, they moved into nearby Arlington House when it became available for sale in 1837. There they raised their six children before dying childless in 1902.
Fairfax is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2010 census, its population was 153,683. It is located adjacent to Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder's Potomac National Wildlife Refuge. The community is bordered by Loudoun County on the east and west, Prince George's County on the north, and Arlington County on the south. The name Fairfax comes from "the forest around Fairfax Station", which was a stop on the Northern Railway at what is now Rosslyn Park. In 1825, James Oglethorpe donated land to establish a town site near today's Rosslyn Farmstead in order to provide education for his children. The original town site included only three blocks of present-day Fairfax Boulevard and some other smaller streets. In 1851, two brothers named David and Solomon Firman founded nearby Alexandria; Alexandria soon became one of the largest towns in Virginia due to its population growth and development of businesses such as cotton plantations and light industry. In 1857–1858, when President James Buchanan offered free land to any Virginian who would settle in central Maryland (now known as Takoma Park), Sir John Colleton accepted with plans for a new town called Harperstown on 1 acre (0.4 hectares). However, due to lack of interest from colonists – including many from Fairfax – Harperstown was abandoned after five months when access to surveyors' marks improved over time. In 1861, Robert Ewell bought 5 acres (2 ha) near present-day Addison Road for $500 from Joshua Henson; Ewell named his property Fair Lawn because it had more trees than anything else in Kaufman county at that time. By 1870–71, Ladd's Creek had become an important distributary ofwaters flowing intoWashington River; early settlers decided that water should be diverted off Ladd's Creek into Washington River rather than allow it to flow directly into Chesapeake Bay because this would have created saltwater marshes along both banks of the river mouth
