Fairfax is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 14,611 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous areas in Northern Virginia. In terms of size and diversity, it is more like an urban area than a rural one. Its boundaries are defined by Interstate 95 to the south and east, Route 1 to the north, and Prince George's County to the west. The town began as part of what is now Prince George's County on March 4, 1792 when British General James Monroe awarded land to Colonel John Waddell for his rifle regiment known as "The Fairfax Regiment". The town was named after Thomas Fairfax (1674–1743), 1st Baron Fairfax of Winchester who owned much of modern-day Arlington Heights and other parts of Fairfax County. The first permanent settler in Fairfax was Major John Ivey (1725–1795) who built a small farmstead on what is now Loudoun Road near present-day West Falls Church. Ivey's son Lt Col Samuel Ivey (1758–1827) also founded a small farming community in what became today's northwest corner of Fairfax County just outside today’s University Park neighborhood within minutes walking distance from his home at Petersburg Road and Northumberland Avenue NW. In 1814 Captain Nathaniel Bacon set up operations as America’s first ferry service linking this area with Alexandria across the Potomac River using wagons drawn by four oxen pulling a flatboat over which goods were unloaded onto piers for shipment downriver or transported by boat upstream into Alexandria proper where they were offloaded onto smaller vessels before being taken downriver again for further transport back to Washington D.C.. In 1824 Captain Bacon donated land including two Ferry Piers bearing his name at Oneonta Landing downstream from modern-day Reston Town Center while still located within present day Arlington Heights limits subject only to restrictions placed upon him by Act Of Congress dated December 7th 1824 during The Administration Of President John Quincy Adams Another early resident associated with this period was Drury Taverner (c 1796? – 1865?), physician/surgeon attached to Commandant James Ketchum’s 2nd U S Marines during Mexican War who settled on lands now part of Crystal City along East Side Highway in that year Drury came from England but had removed himself some time prior thereto so he could practice medicine under American auspices .
