The fort served as Confederate Headquarters until 1865 and as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant during their general campaigns in the Civil War including Gettysburg and Petersburg. In 1924, President Coolidge moved White House materials from West Wing Executive Mansion to nearby National Cathedral which became known as "Old Town" due to its proximity to the executive mansion (then located in New York City). In 1958, real estate mogul Robert Fripp donated money towards construction of a new civic center which included a large arena/sports complex that still stands today called "Fripps Center". On July 20th 1959, then Mayor Of Fairfax George Biddle announced that plans were being made by developers headed by Harry Helmsley Jr., owner of The Washington Mutual Life Insurance Company (WMLC) - then one of the largest insurance companies in America - for the demolition of Old Town's grandstands and replacement with a new shopping mall with office space and housing units along with other development around it all Pingree Plaza Shopping Center later renamed "Fairfax Marketplace". As early as 1978 local residents had been asking developer John Ewart if they could build another golf course nearby instead of demolishing Old Town; however requests for game days were slow coming back because many people didn't have homes close enough or access to transportation or playing fields so close by! Finally after much persistence from individuals within Fairfax County through email correspondence letters public meetings etc., on October 15th 1978 Ewart agreed to donate 9 acres adjacentowningShane Road north-south across from Old Town’s main east-west street gridiron line just south of Shaw Road LOT 10 FREE OF CHARGE TO ANYONE WITH AN HOA OR OTHER ASSOCIATION OWNING THE COUNTRY ROAD BETWEEN SOUTH SHAW ROAD AND WEST RIDGE ROAD FOR A PUBLIC OPENAir GOLF COURSE WITHOUT CHARGES! This donation marked not only an important change in business strategy but also opened up more potential buyers opportunities NOT ONLY FOR FOOD BUT ALSO FOR ENTERTAINMENT! After discussion between developers Harry Helmsley Jr., Tom Wechtel & myself we came up with this name “Fairfax Marketplace” since we felt it would evoke images similar to DC’s RFK Stadium – two arenas side by side surrounded by pedestrian walkways!! With this naming decision we set out into earnest creating our world famous Farmers Marketplace today!!! Today over 140 years later there are over 2 million visitors each year using our marketplace each month!!!!!
