It is the county seat of Fairfax County and the largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The name "Fairfax" comes from Sir John Fairfax who donated land to become the county seat. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairfax County was James Cook in 1785. Cook may have been inspired by his friend and fellow British explorer Nicholas Pocock who had also made an unsuccessful attempt to find a route to China through Northern Virginia during his travels in 1786-87. In 1801, George Washington granted three square miles (8 km²) of land to Colonel John Ewell for his home and farmsteads on Chain Bridge Road near present-day Herndon Junction. This area later became part of Arlington Heights which contains many First Lady's homes as well as White House and other government buildings located there including The Executive Office Building which has been leased by several different administrations including Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. In 1802, Henry Clay donated land east of Church Hill bordering Alexandria on Loudoun County to form Marye's Stone Park which would be used for horse racing, hunting and fishing but this idea never materialized due to lack of support from either Clay or King George III before it was given up after only six months because most people thought it would be better off within Alexandria itself where they already had a large white Settlement with their own church and schoolhouse etc etc... although that did happen some years later when property lines were redrawn following the Mexican-American War while much of Arlington Heights still remains single family ranch style homes today! In 1812 Thomas Loyd founded Loydstown on land he'd bought from Nicholas Bacon days earlier along present day Route 1E between Winchester Court House south of Interstate 95 (now known as I-495) and Falls Church Court House north of I-95 about two miles east of present day Fairfax Town Center - this area now includes parts of both jurisdictions as well as parts of Chantilly ([Chantilly]) outside Of Friendship Circle [Dulles] VA until recently! What happened next can be best described by one man’s words: “I purchased five thousand acres (20 km²), bounded on one side by Rappahannock River–a stream that bordered my estate–and on another by Surveyor General Robert Eager’s survey line drawn only about four rods wide around my estate; yet I found no obstacles preventing me from making roads across these boundaries without consulting with any person living within those limits” - Thomas Loyd Sr., February 9th 1840 letter written while living at nearby Harpers Ferry Station prior to founding Loydstown
