In 1861-1862, Congress passed an act authorizing creation of four additional Virginian townships within Fairfax: Adams (later Botetourt), Bowie Heights (later Frederick Douglass), Clarendon Heights (later Christ Church Cathedral City) and Daleville (later Brentwood). These townships were not incorporated into Fairfax until 1907 because they did not meet certain requirements such as population size or percentage African American residents. During World War II numerous VA factories were located in Fairfax including Ford Motor Company’s Stockton Assembly Plant where millions dollars were spent on producing munitions for the war effort; Raytheon’s Mayport Naval Station where thousands were employed building radar antennas; Walker Aircraft Corporation’s Fort Worth plant manufacturing P-47 Thunderbolts fighter planes; Winchester Ammunition Company’s Winchester Armory facility making artillery rounds; Allied Signal Corporation’s Petersburg plant making electronic warfare equipment such as depth charges and flares; Tobacco Products Inc.'s Lucknow Factory producing cigarettes using forced labor during World War II
