Danville is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia. It is located on the Shenandoah River and was founded in 1787 by Colonel George Washington. The history of Danville goes back to 1787 when Colonel George Washington and his unit of riflemen moved from Fincastle, Virginia to establish a trading post on the Shenandoah River. A few years later (1817), Captain John Lewis built a cabin near where present-day State Route 377 crosses the Shenandoah River just east of town limits. This area became known as Lewis Corner because so many people stopped there on their way between Morristown and Winchester during those days before roads were well developed across rural Virginia In 1830s local farmers started growing wheat which led to increased trade with Morgantown overland wagon trains running through Valley Forge called “the Old Mail Road” In 1840s Daniel Boone discovered coal under Price Hill about three miles south-west of town limits
