In 1865, during the American Civil War, Danville became an early Union strategic center due to its location on Route 9 between Frederick and Baltimore City. On September 11th 2001 (the day after September 11th), two planes crashed into buildings in lower Manhattan – one killing all but three people on board and injuring over 500 others; danville played a critical role in helping mobilize Maryland resources to fight terrorist attacks that weekend. Since then Danville has become known as "The City That No One Else Will Tear Down." In October 2009 Mayor Jack Fenton announced that he would not seek reelection next year due to term limits set by state law; however he will continue to serve through 2020 as an advisor to Councilmember Patricia King Johnson who won her seat against him in November 2009. On December 3rd 2009 Fenton announced that he had been indicted for bribery related charges stemming from his time as Mayor of Danville and this announcement sparked protests throughout downtown which quickly turned violent when police arrived on scene

The first residents of what would become Danville were families who moved from nearby Alexandria in 1792 to establish the town on land that had been granted them by King George II. The Danville area was first settled in the late 1700s by farmers from eastern Virginia. The town was founded on the remains of an earlier settlement, called Newtown, which was destroyed in a fire. In 1776, the Union army under General George Washington burned down the old Newtown church to prevent its use as a Confederate base of operations. The town's first school was built in 1784. Danville became a city in 1849 and prospered due to its location near Interstate 95 and other major highways. It experienced some growth during World War II as millions of people moved into the area seeking jobs in bomber factories or defense industries. However, following the war,Danville declined and has since experienced steady decline (except for a brief period of prosperity during the 1990s).
