Danville is located near Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. The first permanent settler in what would become Danville was George Washington who arrived there in 1775 as part of his journey from Mount Vernon to survey the land for his new capital city, Philadelphia. He named the settlement after his friend and assistant Indian trader Daniel Naylor (1721-1810). The area that now makes up Danville was first inhabited by Algonquian Indians who hunted game around present day Danville Mountain and on the Potomac River. European exploration began in 1607 when Captain John Smith discovered what he thought were native tribes living along present day I-95 and I-64. In 1611, Englishman Christopher Newport explored what became Henrico County while exploring southward along the James River system for England’s Crown Prince James II. When Newport returned home with findings that included a estuary on which he could build a ship so large it could accommodate both men and cargo, he named this newly discovered site “Newport News” because of its location within sight of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Norfolk Bay. The name stuck and modern day Danville derived from it when land developers purchased Portsmouth Naval Shipyard land adjacent to where Newport had landed for development into residential areas including Georgetown (now known as Shockoe Bottom) in 1884; Northumberland Avenue between Fairfax Street/King Street NW and 15th Street SW; South Boulevard between Fairfax Street/King Street NW and 14th street NE; West Boulevard between Fairfax Streets/King Streets NW and 13th street SE; Howard Drive today between King Street NW & 15thStreet SW.; Little Huntingdon Creek flowed through much of this area before draining away into Roanoke Lake outside of town limits some time after 1800 according to some records Some early residents here include: Captain John Smith (1607), George Washington (1775), Nicholas Culpeper (1685), Colonel Edward Johnston (1789), Major General Nathanael Greene (1799-1800), Drury Lane Baptist Church member Samuel Adams reported that “about three hundred people resided hereabouts [in] early years” according to an article headlined "Danville Founders" published by The Daily Progress Newspaper District on October 20, 1912 . A post office called Newtown was established in 1792, but it closed operation two years later due to poor health conditions among its customers In 1823, George Washington granted permission for a canal to be built throughpresent day Danville connecting Rappahannock River with Potomac River via Southbridge Road northeast of town limits This canal would eventually become known as Canoe Bridge Road . On July 3rd 1830 mail service began from Williamsburg Ferry Landing on Yorktown Peninsula using two carts pulled by four horses ; this service continued until 1840 when horse drawn carriages became available . By 1851 only one cart per week reached Williamsburg Ferry Landing via Hopewell Pike due to increased traffic over powered canals caused by growth along I-95 northward A bridge over Little Huntingdon Creek was constructed across it in 1853 connecting town with UpperRichmond County beyond where transportation then consisted primarily of wagons or oxen pulling carts laden with goods upriver past outmoded ferry crossings over Little Huntingdon Creek becoming more difficult every year leading up to 1907 when an improved road connection opened making transportation easier than ever before within danvillians borders
