Danville is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is located within the Richmond Metro area. The population of Danville was around 71,000 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Virginia. The first permanent settler in what would become Danville was James Caldwell, who arrived with his family in 1795. The town was named for General Daniel Boone and his wife Anne Randolph. The community had its start as a residential area on the west side of Route 29 north of where it currently stands. A sawmill and grist mill were built there about 1800 by Captain John Day and others associated with the British West India Company. They used the land to produce flour which they transported back to England aboard ships using horse-drawn carriages called "potters wagons." In 1821, General Thomas Bullock founded Bullock & Co., a cotton spinning business that became one of Fairfax's leading textile mills. By 1830, Danville had become an important center for tobacco farming and processing along with other industries such as printing, banking, whaling, shoe manufacturing and shipbuilding during America's early industrial period. A store being built on Main Street in 1827 by contractor Ezra Stiles served as both a local post office and commercial center until 1840 when mail service increased to Alexandria courtesy of President James Ketchum's efforts to reduce transportation costs through road building projects across Virginia while he was governor of that state (1801-1804). In 1849–50 General Nathaniel Lyon moved his headquarters from Fredericktown to Danville after becoming commander general United States forces against Mexico during its war for independence (1846–48). With Ulysses S Grant occupying Washington D.C., Lyon withdrew most Ulysses S Grant's troops from Mexican territory east of Bexar County on October 25th 1850 under orders from President Zachary Taylor; this move ended La Santa Cruz War (1846) and put an end to Mexican incursions into Texas including what are now Arlington Heights, Arlington Heights Cemetery, Dayton Hill cemetery near downtown Danvilleand parts of Georgetown .Danville also saw some action during the American Civil War with skirmishes taking place near present day Bankers Hill Road between Confederate forces loyal to seceded South Virginian Jno Lincoln Butler late 1861-early 1862 before Union forces reached them; these Confederates were later executed outside town after surrendering .In 1865 Plantation owner George Eastman donated land adjacent to present day Interstate 95 southbound lanes for use as an airport rural development project known then as Eastern National Airport; this project eventually led to large suburban development including several high rise buildings still standing today across I-95 Frontage Road just east off I-495 Exit 10(now US 1).Eastman died without leaving any heirs so control over Eastern National Airport passed through his son Enrico Eastman Jr.'s hands until 1984 when it reverted back back to Commonwealth Control under Section 107(a) Title 44 United States Code effective November 15th 1984 following passage by then President Ronald Reagan signifying federal ownership/management program announced via Executive Order No: “American Airports Incorporated”

Danville was founded by Captain George Washington in 1781. The city was named after General Danforth, a captain in the Continental army. The first settler in what is now Danville was John Sellers, who arrived in 1784. In 1819, the city became part of Alexandria County and then Danville Township. The first store in town was built on the corner of Fourth and Market Streets in 1825. In 1836, the Delaware and Ohio Railroad arrived in town and soon made Danville an important stop on the line. In 1857, it became a county seat of Alexandria County and remained so until 1901 when it merged with nearby Petersburg to form Petersburg-Danville County.
