Danville is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Danville was George Rogers Clark, who arrived on July 17, 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the site of present-day Danville High School. In 1827, he purchase the land that now forms Danville Township from George Washington Smith and others. It was through this purchase that he became proprietor of what is now known as "Clark's Green." In 1829–30, Daniel Boone came to Danville with his party and explored the area around present-day Danville for possible settlement. He recommended that organizer of the Potomac River Valley Railroad John Bigelow build a depot here in order to facilitate transportation between Alexandria and Wacoomba (now Arlington). Bigelow proceeded to make arrangements for the building of the depot and received approval from President James K. Polk to start construction on October 13, 1830. The Depot opened on December 1, 1830; it served as an important link in the early development of western Fairfax County. During its time as an important transportation hub, Danville also saw significant growth in its civilian population due to its location close to major waterways and highways leading into eastern Virginia and Maryland. This growth fostered agriculture as a key industry here; crops such as cotton were grown extensively until recently because of good soil conditions near Route 66 and Interstate 95 in central Virginia. In 1860–61, when Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army from Fredericksburg overland to danville during winter quarters before invading Northern Virginia during April 1861 – May 1861 – danVILLE residents donated food and clothing needed by Confederate soldiers along I-95 corridor just outside town limits –Operation Crossroads Hambonee! In 1865 following Union victory at Appomattox Court House danVILLE experienced Reconstruction Era hardships with increased poverty rates due largely to bans on alcohol being placed by federal government throughout southcentral VA
