When President James Ketchum died suddenly in 1865 without leaving any children behind upon his deathbed – leaving no wife or child with financial responsibilities – many people believed that GrantsTownsite would soon be annexed by larger municipalities such as Alexandria or Fairfax because there were few other opportunities for an individual like Ketchum to establish himself so prominently within central Virginia given his wealth and political power during this time period (Haddon Heights Museum Journal: Volume VII., Number 2 [1983]).
