In 1802, Englishman John Brown established a small farm here named for his father-in-law Colonel James Brown. The first store in Danville was opened by Daniel Boone on October 14th, 1800. For many years it was the only store in town. A post office was established here on February 2nd, 1814; it remained open until 1953. The early days of Danville were difficult as there were few resources available to help rise from poverty. However over time people have worked hard to make their community successful and are proud of their history and culture which has helped them thrive today. Danville is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was established in 1792 as a part of the Colony of Virginia and became an incorporated town on July 1, 1816. The population was 15,827 at the 2000 census. The first white settler in Danville was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1792 and built a cabin on the Potomac River. Captain Smith's cabin soon became the nucleus for what would become the town of Danville. The first buildings were constructed from logs that were brought downriver by ship from Jamestown. In 1801, Colonel Edmund Randolph purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land west of Danville from Thomas Jefferson for $10 per acre. He named his new acquisition "Randolph's Mills" after himself and also founded Randolph's Academy which still exists today as one of Fairfax County's largest private schools. In 1802, George Washington visited Randolph's mills and praised their accuracy in producing hemp yarn which he used to make hats for his inauguration parade. In 1800-1801, Daniel Boone moved to what is now called Parkersburg in Westmoreland County and began farming present-day Cumberland Valley which included parts of present day Danville. After several years living there, he decided to move permanently to Kentucky where he built a log cabin near what is now Covington Dam on the Ohio River about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Louisville/Jefferson County line on October 10, 1814*. His log cabin served as his home until his death in 1840*.
